In the NBA teams sit players based on their own decisions, not because they have some mandate that players can only play a certain amount of games. The league wants the players to play 82 games. In fact teams in the NFL sit players in week 18 all the time if the game is meaningless to them. You think the league wants that? Here’s a hint: they don’t. The idea of the mandate is to make it acceptable to rest them. Pro Soccer (whether its EPL, Spanish leaugue or Series A)- all have 30+ games a season so its expected you rest your stars on lower games in the schedule. Depth becomes more important- young players/developmental players play more and it becomes strategic. It just becomes part of the game like rotating pitchers. Hyperion
It's an interesting idea. I don't actually hate it but it presents problems that the league would never agree to. It'd be fascinating to see the strategy and thought process that would go into sitting important players for certain games.

What games do you play your depth? When do you rest them? Its usually not quite so black and white.. like half a game here or half a game there. It becomes strategic.. Which line do you want against this team vs that team? QBs even.. start to be rotated like pitchers.. honestly it could improve the game- become less dependent on a few big stars... Number9
I went to see the Lakers. Kobe didn't play that night. I don't feel like I saw that Lakers team because I didn't get to see Shaq and Kobe play. Yet they do in preseason (it outdraws MLB, Golf, and Nascar) and when teams sit starters either because they can or due to injury. Oops.

The league still gets an extra week of games to sell. If we are fucking around with scheduling and whatnot: Build some geographic rivalry with a standing AFC-NFC game for each team. Examples: Cowboys v Texans; Rams v Chargers; Bears v Chiefs; Eagles v Steelers; Ratbirds v Commies; Dolphins v Bucs; Giants v Jets. Figure Titans v Falcons. Or would Titans v Saints be better? Might get some that are harder to connect. Broncos v Seahawks? The West teams do kinda ruin it, though.

Might get some that are harder to connect. Broncos v Seahawks? The West teams do kinda ruin it, though. It can't happen. There's a rotation where each AFC division plays each NFC division once every four years. So what are you going to do when the AFC East plays the NFC East? Have the Giants and Jets play twice? It also ruins the schedule balance that the league has been able to achieve. What I think they'll do when they expand to 18 games is have the 1st place team play the 4th place team in the division that they play the "placement game" which is what the Saints-Titans game is this year. 2nd would play 3rd, 3rd play second and 4th would play 1st. So this year the Titans would play at Tampa Bay. Does that make sense? It would further balance the schedule and help take away inequalities that 1st and 4th place teams have. I think the other option would be to have the 1st place teams play second place teams in those divisions while 3rd and 4th play each other. In that case the Titans would play at Carolina. To me that would further make the schedules slanted toward the 3rd and 4th place teams. I suppose they could also do 1v3 and 2v4 if they don't want to go all the way in having 1v4 and don't want to add to the ease of schedules by doing 3v4. In any case, I think they'd just add a second game between the teams in their designated "placement game" division.
