I will point out that the way Fowler worded that and the quote he chose to reference inferred Latham was the preferred choice and Nabers (or Rodunze) was in play vs the next LT in the pecking order.....Fashanu.

They had already made the Latham selection there is no reason not to back that up by saying he was going to be the selection over Nabers if that was truly going to be the case, by not confirming that it suggests they liked Nabers more.

No it doesn't.  He gave a non-answer (as he should for a variety of reasons - some out of respect for the players/process and some being self serving).

He could of killed any speculation on the spot by backing the guy they just drafted and chose not to do so.

And if Latham flops and Nabers is a stud, you want a 1st time nepo HC to be on record???  And if he says Nabers (or in theory Alt) was the preferred choice, what type of message is that to Latham???

He answered it with a non-answer like anyone with a brain would do.  Reading into that is stupid.

I don't think a first year HC backing your 2nd year GM is ever a bad choice nor one that comes back to get him. He didnt do that... most all GM's / HC's seem to say they got the guy they wanted the most regardless if its true or not.

Seems there's a little something there but it doesnt matter.

Possibly he wanted the WR more but it didn't fall that way. No biggie. Ran also said there was a group of 3-4 guys they wouldn't pass on or trade back if they were available. Alt MHJ Nabers Latham all seem to be those guys. We will never know the truth of their rankings and to continue to argue its anything concrete towards either is a silly exercise as no one knows shit and the HC himself says he preferred WR.

Entirely possible Ran and BC differed on what they wanted. Also entirely possible they didnt have to worry about a disagreement because the draft worked out as it did.

There's no reason not to answer it directly if Latham was always going to be the pick over Alt or Nabers.

...and if not then the best answer would have been to lie and say he was.

Rice is having himself quite the offseason.

The Chiefs clearly have an IQ litmus test for WRs.  If it's not in single digits they're not a good fit.

Sure there is.  Better to give a non-answer than get locked into one.  Not that he had the final say over Brinker and Carthon anyway.

better...because?  I'm not seeing the down side in getting locked into the answer that says the guy you drafted was the one you wanted more than the guy you didn't draft.

Because if Latham sux and Nabers is a homerun, then he looks stupid for saying it was always Latham over Nabers.
