Not actually the case in Russia.

You're saying the security services, military etc would side with the oligarchs if it came down to it? ultimately it is he who can issue them orders who has the power.

They wouldn't use them, but they'd threaten to. If you're Russia and you have them, why wouldn't you at that point. What's the use of having them, if you wouldn't threaten with them to prevent NATO from your doorstep?

Keeping in mind that Putin is completely nuts.

Putin isn’t nuts. He isn’t suicidal.

I could see a scenario where Putin would use nukes is he was threatened with losing grip on power in his own country. If he was in the position of Saddam or Gaddafi then I could see it.

But as long as NATO was only going to drive his forces out of Ukraine and not invade Russia then I can’t see it.

I mean... we could. Its Ukrainian air space but it'd probably escalate things.  Its not like it's Syria where we'd be declaring a no fly zone in someone else's airspace without their permission.

Of course we can, but we won’t and shouldn’t. Direct warfare with Russia is not an option.

Even though Germany is a big part of the reason we're here, they really need to be the primary face of this. They're the one nation Putin has a  semi-decent relationship with and, if this is to be de-fused, it will be with the Germans leading it.

I admit that I winced when I read that they're directly arming Ukraine. That's probably not a good tactical move for them to do that, in particular.

All the aid to Ukraine needs to come from an international effort, and leave it at that.

Germany should keep up the illusion of a "peace partner" because they hold the key.

Good point about Germany, but like I said the move is all-in because of the fact Russia has done a full on invasion. It’s too late for fence sitters. The fact this is the first time Germany has supplied arms to any conflict since WW2 says they agree that the time for negotiations is over.

Biden will be too old to run

Not the point.

Biden v Trump in 2024. Who are you voting for?

Just say it. We all know the answer.

Well, if that's true, then all off-ramps are closed, as I see it.

We'll all be rolling the iron dice here, so God help us.

I just can't envision Putin saying OK, I guess I lost. Sorry for the trouble everybody. I thought it would be cool with everyone if we took Ukraine, but we'll just go home now.

I want to see it. I’m with Poland that Ukraine should immediately be admitted into NATO. Open conflict with NATO is inevitable.

Putin’s aim is to stay in power, he can’t do that by starting a nuclear war.

We’re going to have to fight them at some point, may as well do it before letting hundreds of thousands of innocent people die.

That’s just my opinion - it of course won’t go down that way in the immediate term.

It’s too late for that. The West is doing all it can in my opinion.

Nah. I'm saying the rich have power and Putin is only in power as long as he keeps making them rich.

But if they all turned on him, he could just have the killed or imprisoned, no? who has the final power over the Russian security and military services?
