Maybe that’s Scalise. Or maybe it’s someone outside of the House, like Trump (though this seems unlikely now). Probably but at least 3 hardline Republicans have said they'd let it happen. https://politicalwire.com/2023/01/03/conservatives-would-let-hakeem-jeffries-become-speaker/ Again... not saying it's probable, just possible. Starkiller
I wonder how long they could go without successfully voting for a Speaker. I mean, the GOP could just gridlock the House by simply refusing to vote for one…
reo
If Dems continue to say no, no, no to all Republicans until all Republicans give in and elect McCarthy then that'll be a huge missed opportunity for Democrats. But I wouldn't help them for just anyone who'd be just as bad.

ctm
McCarthy's only hope now is to let every other candidate fail, hold his votes and end up as the speaker of last resort.
reo
Imagine if Dems agreed to help elect a moderate Republican in exchange for: 1) No far-right Republicans as committee chairs 2) No committee fishing expeditions 3) Some Democrats as committee chairs The far right would be livid and it could potentially shut down show investigations into the Jan 6th committee and Hunter Biden. And it could mean bipartisan legislation for some of Biden's agenda.... aka a working governing body. But I'm probably dreaming. reo
The vote totals for the second round: Hakeem Jeffries – 212 Kevin McCarthy – 203 Jim Jordan – 19 Other – 0 Looks like the Biggs votes switched to Jordan and the 3 "other" didn't vote. If 8 of those Jordan votes decide not to vote next time, Jeffries wins but probably unlikely. Edited January 3, 2023 by reo

Then someone like Scalise will emerge. McCarthy deserves every bit of whats happening today. it will be shocking if he pulls it out at this point. reo

If it was rehearsed beforehand, this would work, but I do not think anyone would not have at least 5 defections at this point. They might not be able to elect a Speaker. 9 Nines
I keep remembering what Speaker Boehner said. He said the Freedom Caucus would make demands in negotiated legislation. He would then go to the White House to negotiate, and often he would get those concessions from the White House. He would then go back to the House, and the Freedom Caucus would demand more. He said it got worse and worse, and it became futile to negotiate with them. They seem even crazier now. So can they pick a Speaker? I am not sure. It seems more failed votes will fuel the crazies not deter them. Edited January 3, 2023 by 9 Nines Starkiller, OILERMAN, and IsntLifeFunny

McCarthy is drenched in loser stank. His value proposition: if not me, then who? I already gave up the booty and have near-zero leverage. c'mon guys, we're looking bad. red-meat magas: so what?! we're just here to fight and spin narratives. GridLocking our own party is what we're built for, not serving and legislating for the American people. 0 for 3 today, adjourned until tomorrow is a tough start https://thehill.com/homenews/house/3796286-live-coverage-house-set-to-vote-for-next-speaker/ Edited January 3, 2023 by begooode MadMax, and OILERMAN 1
