I've been wondering about that and now it all makes sense. They had a 2 week grace period to incise the tumor, and much like Fox they decided their own personal well being (power) was more important. There are a lot of Trump supporters who aren't even Republicans and won't even show up in the general if it's not Trump already.  I think the 2022 Mid Terms had to terrify Republicans.
