I guess I understand the mechanics of how it happened though. He won in the 2016 primaries with pluralities because of the fractured primary field and winner take all primaries. It's not like most of their voters loved him. Then all it took was an opponent who was literally the next most unpopular candidate of all time for him to squeak out a victory. Partisans and independents alike were willing to accept uncertainty of Trump over the devil they knew. I think it's worth noting that once Trump had a track record, he's caused massive Republican underperformance in 2018, 2020, and 2022.
