You could have given really short odds on who would respond first.

Big whenever someone says something good about Mariota!

Mariota threw into double coverage to Humphries and it was batted away. RT did the same thing but the placement was perfect. Down lower and to the left where the receiver could use his shoulder to screen off the defenders.

Mariota clearly wasn't great in PSG1, but this wasn't a play where he deserves criticism.

The Eagles D was in zone coverage....Humphries hits a crease and Mariota fires it in quickly, but one LB anticipates the play and jumps the route the moment Hump turns.   It's bang-bang play and it's impossible to tell from the camera angles whether the LB gets a hand on the ball, but it definitely hits Hump in both hands.   However,   it wasn't so much a drop or a questionable throw as much as it was great recognition and a great play by the LB.   (Had Mariota thrown it lower and to the left as you suggest, he's throwing it straight to the LB for an easy INT.)

They obviously won't be targeting Humphries 80% of the time this year.....I'm sure they were intentionally pushing the envelope to test the chemistry.  But after Hump was targeted 4-5 times on that first drive, the defense was clearly keying on him for this play;  that LB was locked in on him from the moment the ball was snapped.    Once the season starts, the presence of Davis and Delanie will make it impossible for defenses to key on Humphries....but Art Smith and Mariota still need to be cognizant and avoid going to that well too often.

It was easily Mariota's best decision of the night. A nice, aggressive throw to try to convert instead of settling for a check down. We need more of that from him.
