B b b but cassel the best backup there is!!! What's he thinking doesn't he know ten years ago he had a good season with the pats?!?

I don't recall anyone saying that about Cassel. But, I've always found that line funny.

The Titans couldn't evaluate WRs, but they could always find a backup QB posters would immediately claim was the best backup QB in the league.

That could have been argued as true for quite a while. Going from O'Donnell to Volek to Collins(well, 06-08 Collins at least), you could argue each of those were the top backup QB in the game, or at least near the top.

Good news is this is a great offseason to go out and find a veteran backup. Tanney has flashed. Personally I would feel better with a vet but Tanney is better than Mett at least and the truth is if Mariota goes down it doesn't matter who the backup is.

At some point soon it will though, the only reason it never mattered was because we were empty of talent throughout the roster... That isn't the case necessarily now and probably won't be the case going forward.

If we ever think we are a playoff team we can't have the forfeit every game mm doesn't play mentality.

This is my take on the whole thing....

Like Wisco said at some point it will matter. I agree.

There is going to come a time when we are doing well and if Mariota gets hurt we are going to need a strong backup otherwise our whole season will be over in an instant if we have a weak backup.

I'll give you an example.

In '99 there were 5 games McNair couldn't play and backup QB Neil O'Donnell was able to go 4-1 during those games. If we would've had a Rusty Smith or a weak backup in '99 our whole season could've been in jeopardy.

Tanney i'm not so sure. He looked rough in one of the recent games he had. Yes i know he also had a good game vs. Indy as well. I'm not confident Tanney could lead things for multiple games.

I'd rather have a top backup like Hoyer if he became available. Make him the top paid backup that way we at least we know we aren't dead in the water should something bad happen again.

Back in 2008 when VY was hurt first game Kerry Collins was considered a good vet backup and it paid off when we went 13-3 BUT like i said before if we would've had a weak backup like a Jim Sorgi/Curtis Painter we'd been screwed.

1999 and 2008 are two examples a decade apart and shows that it paid off for Tennessee that they had good backup QB's.

We don't ever want to be 8-2 in the midst of making the postseason only to have Mariota go down and then be thinking to ourselves damn we should've signed a better backup QB.

Actually just said like yesterday which is why I brought this up

Wait...I must have missed that, which means whoever said it was not ridiculed nearly enough. Please call them out so they can receive the public lashing they deserve.

Don't forget about Hasselback!
