Soccer

Then what part of "The World Cup soccer tournament is bigger than the NBA Finals or the World Series in measured US viewers" is hard to understand?

And again...who cares?  You are talking about an event that happens every 4 years.  If the US isn't in the Tourney, a good chunk of the folks here wouldn't watch.  Luckily the US team is better.  I watched their games.  Just like I might watch some track and field events in the olympics.  I'm not saying that soccer doesn't have U.S. fans or isn't growing, but as a whole, it will never be as popular as the major sports here in our lifetime.

The biggest problem with soccer is and always has been, the fact that it exists.

@Oilerman is once again light years ahead of the curve.  If we can somehow marry the institutions of death and soccer, problem solved.  It's not like the refs will let MM drop kick the downfield passes.

I like Soccer but using the world cup as an example isn't a good idea. I know a lot of people who watch the world cup and then don't watch anything soccer-related until the next one. I was one of those people so I should know.

Soccer is awesome and people who don't get it are blind idiots. ;-D

Better get used to it because MLS is booming in the US these days. Apparently ... A lot of other ppl like it.

That's interesting. I haven't met any.

So are the jackass marathon runners.

Let's tie em to the back of trucks, and see how long they can go before they get dragged?

I have a lot of respect for people who run marathons. But at least you don't have people trying to pretend that running is some major sport in this country.

Sounds like a personal problem.

I think more like a statistical reality, particularly in the area where we live.

I went to high school with a pretty diverse group, and the only people I knew who were soccer fans were Hispanic.

No doubt it is on the rise, but I'd be very surprised to see the sport surpass the 4 major sports in America in my lifetime, as others have noted.

Granted, I don't watch any other sports or invest any energy in them other than professional football, aside from going to a hockey game once every couple years.

I listen to sports talk radio everyday here in D.C. and while soccer isn't talked about as much as the big 3, it's definitely on the minds of people. Nice try Scine.

Complete baloney.

And it's big 4, not big 3.

The NFL is so much larger than the other sports it's disingenuous to lump them into a "big 4."

The other three are picking up scraps compared to the NFL.

That's true.

But MLB, the NHL and the NBA are closer to the NFL than MLS is to MLB, the NHL and the NBA.

"Progress?" lol what "progress" do we need? This is the greatest country in the world. If it wasn't people wouldn't be moving here, they'd be moving away from here.

ahah... in fact, there was a time under a decade ago that more Mexican were leaving the country on their own accord than were coming in.

...and you mean the largest military power in the world. We are decades behind half the world's industrialized countries in education, healthcare, quality of life, poverty, crime...

You cant say we are the best in the world and want to compare us to Mexico. Thats not how it works. Kentucky Basketball doesnt parade the streets bragging about how great they are because they beat Tennessee state. You want to say we are the greatest country in the world you have to compare us to the Norways and Switzerlands, even France.

You cant say we are the best in the world because Mexicans want to move here. Where else would they go?!?! If I work next to a Wendy's and cant get to another burger... do I proudly proclaim that Wendy's makes the best Cheesburgers in the whole world?

We have the capacity to be the greatest country in the world... but we are far from it right now. We are just the most protected...

Are the Latinos moving to Canada or to Europe? In general you still have to take a plane if you're from one of those countries to get here.

And Canada is a great country. It's still not the US, however.
