I'd argue that the line is thinner than most people realize, and that mostly we are products of circumstance until we rise above it. But we can never escape it. Edit: We would all like to believe we wouldn't shoot "Viet Cong" from a heli for sport like they do in Full Metal Jacket, but we've never been pushed there. We'd all like to believe we would never rob a liquor store at gunpoint -- but do we really know? If we haven't been pushed so far down from our highest reaching to be more than an animal? Or was I one of the kids crying? I envy optimists and pessimists. They always know what's coming. I'm not the guy who says the glass is half full or empty. I measure the fucking water. Ayn Rand and your quoting leaves too many questions that you must think about rather than letting a 100 year old capitalist extremist novel answer for you. Like... If you can never reach the good than you can never reach the bad. But then - is there even a good or evil? Life just IS for most philosophers. Clarifying us as "nasty" is a value judgement against... what? un nasty? what is "un nasty" Pure? What is "pure"? Humans and existence aren't good nor bad. Evolution is the process for advancing towards a goal that we don't know for what/where/when/for/which we are striving. We, as earth animals, have figured out over billions of years that working together benefits more than as individuals. Sometimes, selfishness wins in the evolutionary battle. But mostly, it loses - that why society evolved. For life contentment and happiness, selfishness loses. in every study, like, ever.. - at least for the majority that are capable of a full emotional range. As far as that selfishness... There are many people that don't care about spreading their seed or surviving, that only want to help others. What is the evolutionary purpose in that? Just to feel good for zero reason? They already lost! Their seed and progress never caught on! All other energy use towards them feeling OK is wasted, right?!?! Of course not... And to end, for humans to be unique in their morality, then you must believe humans are special. So we must have been created to be unique from the animals; and so seemingly moral acts among animals must be mere curiosities - glitches in the matrix. Yet kind acts of animals towards other species occurs all the time. No, your better argument would be one devoid of value - after all, we all are just slaves to our innate survival instincts, yes?
