Not directed at you but I hate this player reached x mph bullshit that we've gotten over the past few years. its a useless stat that sounds cool and everyone uses them without actually asking what does it mean?

You don't know what mph means?

I'm surprised the Rams didn't just sign him instead of trading for McCreary

Borgo ain't lyin when he says he's making 5 year decisions

20 MPH might be a meaningless football stat but it’s an impressive athletic feat regardless.

Not surprised your dumbass took it that way. Its a useless stat because it means nothing. Kelce hit 22 mph in the Bills playoff game last year. Does anyone think hes still crushing the 40? Of course not.

Bingo which means one of two things:

1. Its not an impressive feat and we should stop treating it as such

2. The way the data is being measured is faulty

Top speed like that is pretty useless in the NFL. Most plays are more quick bursts of stop and start moves. Quickness is way more important than top speed.

It’s just an interesting factoid, and has entertainment value in the moment, imo, like a classic big man rumble. The time it’s useful is when a guy beats out someone chasing on a pursuit angle, like when Van Jefferson housed it like a track star in the preseason when I was sure dude would get caught.

Practically every player in the nfl runs +/-2mph from 20. Hell, i think sweat was clocked at like 16.5 last year.

Edit: the nextgen nfl data at least looks like that.

Yeah, the MPH is essentially a marketing tool that makes the average Joe fan feel good about a metric they easily understand.

Will say it is pretty cool to see on some of these run-downs like posted above. I think to when D.K. Metcalf ran down Buddha Baker - I'm not sure I trust the numbers provided, but you knew Metcalf was able to hit top speed quickly and maintain it for an insane distance, and that just reassured what one's eyes are seeing.

But yeah, really just a marketing tool.

More useful would be if they could put a tiny accelerometer in the helmets, the top speed is easy to comprehend for your average person so its fun for a casual fan for sure like you said. But knowing how quickly some of these guys can start and stop would likely be much more useful. Would love to see the graph for some of barry sanders runs. probably looks like an ekg of aomeone having a heart attack.

I’d never do it if I were Goodell and company. I’d be worried about any chance the devices would capture deceleration statistics. That much concussion data out there, directly on helmets, would probably have their lawyers up all night

I actually thought about that while i was typing it, but from a possitve use stand point. Ok, they can shove them up their asses. No need to worry about concussion data then, unless levis gets to take the field at aome point.
