Well for anyone who cares to read this, here are my (lengthy) thoughts now that I’ve had a chance to sleep on it.   I’ll start by saying I'm not sure I've ever been more hyped for an episode

I loved the fact that Theon won his fight cause he has no dick. Haha

SPOILER

Balerion died of old age. This was in Fire & Blood.

I think the show is designed to be about the Dance of the Dragons, which is years after Balerion died. Still plenty of dragons, but not Balerion. But I’m not sure what kind of backstory to the Targaryen reign they will give us.

It’s all a matter of who is running the show. At least in this case they aren’t going to run out of material from GRRM. He has already written the account of the Dance of the Dragons.

This show is going to be like the Titans for me.  I'm going to remain hesitant but then will get hyped just before it comes out.  The F&B book was enjoyable, but there are plenty of "dialogue gaps" to be filled by the show writers.  All the same, there are fewer moving pieces to juggle, so it should be more in line with other narratives.

I'm curious as to their pacing of it.  Are they going to stretch this thing out for 2-3 seasons?  Or are they going to go the route of New Line Cinema and The Hobbit and cram it full of extra shit to drag it out?

Hiding a bit in the thread.

Please be careful talking about character deaths and years and stuff. I'll paint with a really broad brush and just say some of that stuff could happen during a war involving fucking dragons and we shouldn't start down that path.

I bet you get a full season of setup (if not more) before the war even starts in earnest. Just characters and intrigue and relationships ... then the precipitating event and dominoes start falling and true, full chaos starts. Then a season or two of war, at least. There are a number of arms and legs and gives and takes to the war.

I would like that.  My thoughts/concerns:

They will need some "action" pieces to "wow" audiences.  Off-hand, I can't remember any big action events in the story leading up the war itself.  But, the early seasons of GoT did not have big action scenes until the Battle of Blackwater Bay, so perhaps my thinking is being skewed by the shittier story-telling late seasons.

I am having a tough time imagining them allowing the war to drag out w/o resolution past a season.  Again, I'd have to go back to see where they could do a season break that would provide some resolution while setting up the next story-arc.

My thought is you have the brother/uncle fighting battles and being dapper as the Lord of the sea or whatever, cement the kings opinion on things with some councils and introduce the players and the dalliances and fill with a tourney or an imagined uprising ... something to give perspective on how and why people are perceived as strong or conniving, etc. Give background on all the relationships that setup the sides people eventually take so that there's tension and obvious conflicts when all hell break loose. That's a whole season or more if they want it.

As far as the war, there is a lot of intrigue and betrayal and planning and various battles mentioned. That stuff is super easy to stretch. You've gotta have setup for each, then battle, then show the emotive responses and how the battle impacts things. That book was written so dryly that it needs all sorts of details just to link from one thing to another. You've basically got bones and a few tendons. You need the muscle and the skin and the blood of the conflict. Lots to fill with and they can have some of the bigger battles or deaths as season enders. I can see a good 4 seasons without too much useless filler ... and there's always useless filler.

Where they actually wound up isn't necessarily bad. Everyone is piss drunk mad over what happened with Dany, and that's understandable. Everyone wants to shit all over Bran winding up the king, but that was actually about the only thing that made sense in the final season. They actually could have had everyone essentially wind up in the same geographical spot the show left them in and the ending would have been far, far better received had they 1) made Tyrion the Targaryen people thought he would be and 2) not killed Dany. #1 would have facilitated #2. Dany finding out that Tyrion is actually her brother... by her own hand, in that victorious (for her) setting... would have logically led to stopping her from going any further down her "mad queen" path.

Tyrion... alive and Targaryan, but refuses the crown due to everyone hating the Lannisters (and Targaryens)
Jon Snow... refuses a crown he never wanted or asked for, goes north of the wall by his own choosing and not by banishment.

Daenerys... refuses the crown after realizing she would never have the same love, adulation, and acceptance as ruler that she had in Essos. Goes back to Essos, not in the claw of Drogon, but on the back of Drogon

Arya... nothing changes for her. Sails west
Bran... becomes king after Tyrion suggests he be chosen as king. "Would you accept being king?" "Why do you think I came all this way?"

Also... instead of Jon Snow being trapped behind that infinity stone of a boulder the undead dragon was helpless to penetrate with his icy hot breath, they could have had him make his way over to Bran just after the Night King dispatched Theon. They could have had an epic sword fight there and had Jon fight a valiant battle before losing his sword (as he always did), and had that be the thing that gave Arya the opportunity to fly in like Batman to save the day.

I wonder how many seasons we'll get of this. I don't imagine it'll be anywhere near the 8 we got from GOT. Well, 7.3 seasons anyway. 3? Maybe 4?

I’m sure they can get at least 3 seasons worth of story out of a Targaryen civil war.
