cenj
Didn't know anyone thought there was mystery about Stannis. He's obviously dead. Boring episode. I get the need for setup, but even the dialogue was stale. Seems like they were milking it, turning 20 min of content into an hour. Previews looked awesome though, so I'm hopeful for the season, especially now that tyrion will be back running a kingdom.
Jamalisms
I doubt we get much great Tyrion stuff in Mereen without the family dynamic. Would love to be wrong, though. Immediately after last season I wondered about Stannis. Kind of decided he was alive after rewatching, though. I still think they left it somewhat open so GRRM could conclusively conclude that storyline first ... but GRRM took his time again, so... whatever. BTW, who was it that argued with me about the show overtaking the books back towards the beginning of this thread? I'm right, whoever you were. OILERMAN
Legal is right, Brienne isn't the type to issue a sentence of death to a sworn enemy and not kill him.
oldschool
If it was so cut and dry regarding Stannis, why did they make the conscious decision to not show it? It goes against everything the show is about. D&D are total fuck ups though so it's not beyond the realm of possibility they didn't show it just to mess with people. Starkiller
You know they get a bit squeamish about gratuitous violence...

Legaltitan
Ok I get that argument. They didn't show it so there is some doubt. Never was any doubt in my mind from the moment it happened. And then this first episode seemed to make it clear he was dead. Was it here someone said they were maybe keeping their options open in case Martin had big plans for Stannis? And it seems to me it is time to end the bitching and whining about the shows not being perfect like people want them. If not for the show, we would have nothing to continue the saga. Who knows if the Winds of Winter will ever be finished? One thing that I think is great is that when there is a boring tangential storyline that the show guys don't want anymore, they just fucking bam end it. The painfully long and boring Dorne plot that went absolutely nowhere because the dumbass got burned alive and his friends killed? Bam, over. No one gives a shit. Number9
I like the new direction. The guy refuses to end the book, so HBO must have permission to do it for him.

We all agree the Dorne arc was drawn out in the books. The point is that D&D made Doran look like the antithesis of how GRRM wrote him and instead propped up the Sand Snakes and their useless mother. If you were going to make Doran out to be the blind fool he ended up being then why waste a season on him in the first place. Jamalisms
http://www.vulture.com/2016/04/game-of-thrones-dorne-plot-whats-going-on.html Pretty spot on for Dorne.

To provide a vehicle for enmity between Dorne and the Lannisters and a reason for them to do battle (thus throwing the realm into further chaos) without sending "Frog" on a year-long fantastic voyage. Starkiller
I don't know what GRRM has planned for Dorne down the road (does he even know?), but honestly they could have just left Dorne out of the show entirely following the Read Viper's death. Legaltitan
I don't read Jamal's posts. Sorry. I just don't care enough. Dorne was stupid in the books, other than the Red Viper, and stupid in the show other than the Red Viper. But at least in the show they got to a reasonable, relevant point quickly rather than spend forever and a day getting nowhere. I will agree the scenes largely don't work well, but again they didn't work in the book either and at least we can move on quicker. The show Dorne plot, tacked on as it is, makes 100x more sense than the books. I mean the elevating Myrcella to queen and the idiot going to Mereen to tame dragons. The member of the Kingsguard getting caught up in the plot. It was all very terrible, unbelievable, pointless and stupid. The only thing redeeming was the description of Arianne's body. The only thing worse in the books was the 100 pages of Tyrion asking where whore's go. Your life will be so much better if you just accept the fact that these are now two different stories, which is nice. If GRRM doesn't finish the books, well at least we have one complete story. If he does, we will have two complete stories. Edited April 28, 2016 by Legaltitan
