Anyone who even muttered the word “overrated” in regards to Joe Alt is proof that some people will do anything to come across contrarian. Alt was flat out one of the best LT prospects ever. The dudes one weakness was being too tall so he loses the leverage battle a bit LOL. He was an absurd prospect & never even played OL until his 1st year at Notre Dame where he just deleted folks.

Im sure there were also a handful of dorks saying Bruce Smith & Reggie White were overrated.

It was really weird, people claimed he had a bad anchor, they also complained that he didnt pancake people in the run gsme, meanwhile every snap looked like he was playing across from his little brother. It wasn't just here either, quite a few media guys said the same(more or less) and it made lite sense.

The could be a probowler but does he have allpro upside that was repeated a ton confused the hell out of me.

If the Titans have functional pass blocking OTs in known passing situations then this all works out. The Titans have not been able to drop back in a passing set and give their QB adequate pass blockin

It’s a front loaded deal which is always the best way to structure a big deal

Now Titans have the luxury of having Latham sit and learn behind NPF

I saw some stats that showed when Alt was on the field vs out was about the same as SF losing Trent Williams

The amazing part about that was when he did play it was on a bad ankle. And that was switching over from RT because Rayshawn Slater blew his knee out in camp. Both are healthy this year. It’s unfair to have Joe  Alt as your RT LOL.

I’m putting a few hundred down on the LAC to win the Bowl. I think they have the best roster in the league.

It’s the age old trap of the truly elite of elite prospects. They’re so dominant for all 3-4 years that people almost start to imagine certain “flaws”. So they’ll start doing things like you said, showing video of reps they may have lost or games where they just won run reps & didnt pancake their guy. This stuff always happened a bit but now you have social media draft experts so it’s a lot more common.

Actually now that I think of it, the ‘24 NFL.com final rankings had Latham ahead of Alt as the top tackle. I think Zierlien’s write up basically said that, he wasn’t nasty enough of a run blocker. Nothing against JCL but it was absolutely ludicrous to rate him over Alt. But if you remember in the last week or so there were reports that teams were a bit more split on the two than reported which I highly doubt. But a few if the late mocks had the LAC making JCL the 1st tackle taken. That was never happening.

People were posting podcasts of people talking about how Latham was the better prospect because power apparently was the most important trait in an LT. Then when it leaked that Bill Callahan liked Latham more than Alt and would take him even with Alt on the board, disagreement with this clearly incorrect assessment was considered arm-chair GMing or "thinking you know more than the NFL coaches". Now all of a sudden it's "everyone knew Alt was far and away the best prospect". Yeah ok. We all get shit wrong but you gotta own that.

Who? I recall very few if anyone claiming Alt wasnt clearly LT1 that draft. When the Titans selected Latham after him the fanbase universally groaned and then some tried to say well Callahan SR better be right. hint: he wasnt...

There is a lot of revisionist bullshit in this thread of late.

There are always idiot outliers but the overwhelming consensus was Alt was the best LT by far, and that we all wanted him to be a Titan. Hell I don't even remember folks saying Latham was the next best choice. I would say most of the board was dubious of him as a LT in the NFL and were wary of drafting Latham that high.

I dont remember many if anyone saying latham was better on here. But there was certainly some Olu fans on here who had him over alt.

Again, the argument was who had the higher ceiling. Alt being the best out of the box guy was not much of a question(there were  couple but thats always going to be the case). How good would he be at his peak was the discussion.

That discussion had a pretty clear narrative which we have been talking about, that being a meanful group of people saying he would be good just not great.

That all said I wasn't an olu fan, he was 4th on my tackle list, I didn’t even have latham on my list so Ill call that a wash.

I was very surprised when they took Latham.  I thought it would be the Penn State tackle

In hindsight Latham should have been obvious because using premium picks to make players something they're not is a Titans staple

Olu(Penn state) was far and away the most commonly talked about guy beside alt. Fuaga and Fautanu also were talked about but as RT and trade back options respectively.

I didn't say it was a massive wave of people. I'm saying those conversations definitely happened and it's not just me that remembers them. Maybe you didn't participate in them because I remember you being very pro Alt but I guarantee you if you dig into those threads from draft time that year you'll see them.

I don't remember anyone specifically saying Latham was better either but rather that if Bill C decided that Latham was better, no one should really have anything to say about that. Someone posted a podcast with I think Cosell and some other OL expert and the focus of the conversation was how Latham was the best prospect because of his power.

I do remember that. I was speaking about leading up to the draft not all the work people did to justify it afterwards.

That said I may be a bit bias because I wanted nothing to do with Latham. I had a multi paragraph rant on him where admittedly I went a bit overboard on how much I didnt like him and how bad I thought he would be with penalties in the nfl.

IIRC the podcast was before the draft but my memory wasn't the best. I didn't hate Latham as a prospect. I felt he was the right pick with Alt gone and still do regardless of how he turns out as a player. I had my doubts about him given his average athleticism and having to transition to LT but I gave Bill C and him the benefit of the doubt. It's water under the bridge at this point but definitely something to keep in mind next time we're in line to draft a top LT.

I dont remember when the cosell on latham podcast came out. I know the Alt isn't elite podcast where he just said he doesn't pancake people for like 12 min straight came out before the draft.

I think the key was the run blocking in favor of Latham .  And they thought they could coach up whatever deficiencies that Latham had in terms of technique.
