OILERMAN
Callahan got the "no QB, terrible talent pass". He wasn't retained because it was his 1st year. No coach was doing well in that situation. If they didn't think Callahan was qualified to handle a QB with the first pick and build the offense around him they would have replaced him. tgo, NashvilleNinja, titanruss, and 1 other

Those things certainly factored into it but the expectation that he will grow as a HC and play caller was specifically cited by Brinker when he announced he was staying. He definitely got the benefit of being a first time rookie HC. Edited April 17, 2025 by BudsOilers
NashvilleNinja
Levis lessening the amount of passes shot put from his butthole later in the season could be considered a testament to Callahan's abilities. As far as the fans are concerned the jury is still out on Callahan. And maybe it is for Amy too, which should send cold chills down Cally's spine given how quickly she can drop a scythe. But at the end of the day you can't squeeze blood from a rock and Levis is pure granite. Now, if Ward struggles to look anything like what he did in college... Callahan sucks, but having to settle for the bottom of another HC scrap pile as your first major move as GM is a poor business decision. Ward has adapted to 3 different programs and numerous coaches, it's unlikely that permanent damage is going to be done to him in 1 season. The new GM likely feels confident that he can improve upon the current Callahan bar of 3 wins & develop goodwill with the fans and owner, and most importantly make the case to a better class of prospective HC coaches in the future. Is this was true Brinker should be fired. Of course they do not believe he sucks or they would have fired him like they did Carthon. If the 3 win season and an indicator of true job performance you could argue Brinker should have been fired, which some idiots did.

Do you think Robinson decided Mularkey wasn't good enough after winning a playoff game, or do you think that he wanted to make the move the entire time yet waited until he had the cards to make the move? Forcing Amy to add yet another former personnel member to her payroll while bringing in someone like Aaron Glenn would be a stupid, Will Levis-caliber decision from a first year GM. Why some of the brain dead fans can't grasp how that 3-14 record was far more the blame of Robinson, Carthon, and Vrabel is beyond me. But hey, Callahan's proving ground is fast approaching. So if the team shows no improvement it will only be a matter of time.
titanruss
Callahan seems like a great teacher. He's empathetic and patient and understands the process and that part of it. That bodes wel for QB development. As a coach, he was a rookie in a lot of ways. 1st time playcalling, media face, directing total team meetings, gameplans, etc. They expected this when they hired him. WE expected this and we commented on it a bunch before his first game. He wasnt great, but if we dont fuck up on ST and turn the ball over less we could have easily won 6 more games if not more. He fixed the ST coach issues. Would be great if he had another offensive assistant. I will say that I think drafting Ward will help.. not necessarily just because Ward is a better player than Levis/Rudolph (he is but), more that he probably thought he could fit Will into the Burrow mold. So if the team shows no improvement it will only be a matter of time. Nobody could have been expected to perform well. But with the worst record in the league and half the wins of his precessor, Callahan clearly brought his own issues. This really doesn't sound like that big of an endorsement from Brinker. Basically the same, "yeah he sucked but maybe he won't suck next year" we hear from fans: "He knows, and we’ve talked about it, that it wasn’t good enough this year. And I think Brian is really self-reflective in that regard, and he understands that he has to be better, and his staff has to be better. And, quite frankly, we all have to be better, including me. We want to give Brian that opportunity to continue to grow. It just takes time to build a program.”

It's an admonishment that he, and in fact they all, have to do better. It's the most Captain Obvious statement ever. No shit they all have to get better than 3-14. Part of getting better is getting better players, players that fit what you do and want to do/who you are. Callahan didn't draft Levis. The blame for who and what he is does not fall on Cally. Sure, it would have been nice if Cally could have turned chicken shit into chicken salad, but it is what it is. FireInTheHole
Bongo59
I think BC comes into this seaseon with a hot seat. I do not see him getting another pass in 2025.
FireInTheHole
I reserving final judgement until we see what Callahan does with Ward, and if the play calls get any better. I didn’t have a huge problem with the play calling, but it did get better as the year went on. Things definitely didn’t help having Levis at the helm.
