Ok, so I watched this instead as a Gene Hackman tribute.  Damn what a film. (Warning;  long post on Unforgiven follows)

Anyway, you’re right .  Honestly, if he gave fair justice all the way in the beginning of the film after the whore got cut up , none of this would have happened.  And in the end he did “deserve” it.

This is also a truth and fiction film or myth vs reality (of cowboys/killers old west).  There are way too many bullshiters in this film.  The worst is probably the kid.    The way that Little Bill just basically tore apart the myth of English Bob killing that guy was ace. At the end of that you can see the Saul Rubinek character “oh shit I’ve been following and listening to the wrong guy”.

The appeal of Little Bill is this : he’s a no nonsense tell it like it is type .  In truth, he probably is closest to the traditional “good guy” in the western.

The William Munny character is interesting is that he seems to almost be ashamed of all his deeds of the past and tries to downplay them as opposed to the others in this film who can’t wait to brag how great they were.  It’s almost as if he seeks/sought repentance for all those horrible things he did.

The only reason we got a glimpse of the real William Munny is because of the honor amongst thieves ethos.  The ending sequence where he goes into the saloon and he doesn’t say much and he just looks at the people in the saloon is great stuff.  And it’s dark, rainy and there’s like a fire outside and it’s basically hell on earth and the Devil is back.

Last point : this is a great score.  I enjoyed the acoustic sounds in the film while these guys are riding along in the wheat fields and whatnot.

I'm not a be rewatch guy unless.with someone i care about and want them to see it (my girl, my kids), but think Yeah I need to watch that again.

French Connection too.

Just read Bill Murray's comments about how Hackman was a huge PITA to Wes Anderson on set of The Royal Tennebaums.  Vet prestige actor not jiving with young whipsmart Uber control freak direct. Apparently Bill got Bill to push through and ended up as the "best last performance of his career" sorta thing.

I rewatch because I tend to miss stuff and also sometimes if it’s one of those thrillers with a t twist ending you can see the clues that were there that you didn’t notice before.

On the Murray thing, yeah I can see that since he’s sort of the bridge between Hackman and Anderson.

I do kind of prefer 80s Bill Murray to serious Bill Murray of the last 25 years or so, even if I do love some of those films.

So apparently Gene Hackman's wife fucking died and then he just wandered around the house with dementia until he had a heart attack. Almost as brutal as Layne Staley. Wonder if any animals got a snack of the Hackman's

There’s no good way to go with Alzheimer’s. Being trapped alone with no one to care for you sounds bad on the surface, but living another 3 years with it sounds worse to me.
