The biggest bright spot last night was Sweat's play.    6 tackles, 2 more loss and constantly disrupting the Miami blocking schemes. He did this without Simmons as well. He played 78% of the

Titans HAD to upgrade their Dline. Newton, Fiske, and Jenkins were all guys who played the same role as Simmons. I like those guys but I've told people all offseason that the Titans weren't going to d

As long as they can keep Sweat away from Davenport he's got a chance!

It might have played out differently; they signed him to a huge contract to be a penertrating 3 technique and then brought Shanny in who decided to make him a NT  and threw it in his face to accept it as part of some huge accepting of culture change thing or go lay an egg. It was actually really insulting the way it was handled.

That doesn't excuse him.

Haynesworth was a 320 pound man with the athleticism of a DE/OLB.  Be optimistic all you want to about Sweat, but don't be ridiculous.

I don't think anyone is saying he's haynesworth. Different skillsets. Different responsibilities.

Haynesworth did nothing special his first four years because he was immature and did not work at his craft.  When he say he had to work to get big dollars he hit his potential.  His last 2.5 years here showed he had HOF ability and his mindset ruined that career.  AH created a monster DL with KVB.  Those two alone made the DL lethal.

Sweat looks like a different cat.  He will make our best DLman, Simmons more lethal because Sweat will command two OL to block him.  no OC can leave Sweat and Simmons one on one with them.  The collateral effects of this is Landry becomes more lethal.  The next layer is that Murray reaches his potential because he can run.  This is what Siragusa and Adams provided Ray Lewis when he was young fast and undersized.  The Ravens never had elite edge players.  They were good but never elite.  And yet the defense was better than those defense with elite edge talent.

Count me in saying I think Sweat might be the best replacement for Autry.  He won't have 11 sacks but Landry, Jeff, the other DL and LBs are going to get that 11 because Sweat is here.

One really interesting fact in here:

Sweat came to Texas as a 6-foot-3, 249-pound high school defensive end. Sweat has even more untapped potential as a pass rusher given how he moves, but he will need to clean up his tendency to play too upright off the snap.

The guy is still learning to play the position and to even use his newfound mass. There still more upside to be found.

I'm getting excited about this defense's potential.

Say for sake of discussion they sign Justin Simmons or Maye.

They come out in 11 personnel and Titans come out in nickel w/ a front 4 of Key, Simmons w/  Sweat to his right and Landry w/ 2 ILBs in Murray and Gray. Sneed, Awuzie, McCreary at corner w/ Simmons/Maye and Hooker on S.

That central diamond of LG, C, RG have problems. If Sweat lines up over the center (which might not happen often but easier to visualize), they either try to single block him and he pushes the C into the QB or get help from the LG ideally trying to pass him off to the LG so the C can come off to help the RG vs Simmons. Then there's a gap between the LG and LT for a blitzing Murray. If they try to crash their blocking scheme to the right to push Sweat into Simmons, that creates an even larger gap for Murray. If the LT tries to help then that opens Landy vs maybe a TE. Assuming any of these guys getting past the line would overwhelm a RB staying in to help.

They almost have to run it to the outside to get away from that middle so you can bring down Hooker. Both him and Gray should have the speed to run those down esp if you know it's coming.

And then the quick passing game is hard b/c all Sneed, Awuzie and McCreary are very good press man corners and you have Hooker down to try and shut it down too w/ Simmons/Maye playing deep.

This defense can create some exciting problems for offenses... at least on paper. We'll see if they can follow up on it.

What alignment do you think they use for that most offten? 2I for Sweat and 4I for Simmons?

The only thing, on paper, that this defense is missing is a bigger DE who can rush the passer like a Chase Young. A line of Key, Simmons, Sweat and Landry is really small to set the edge and if you put in Day for Key then you're losing some of that pass rush. But the thought is Simmons and Sweat should take up so much attention that it won't matter too much.

That type of player will be who I'll be keeping an eye on, even in an older vet, when cuts start happening. I'm not expecting someone to come available but it's possible.

Then it's just upgrading on guys like Key and Landry for more pass rush.

I think it depends on what type of pressure scheme they're bringing or trying to make it look like their bringing.

Keep in mind guys that Murray was known for being an aggressive blitzing ILB. It's when they changes schemes that he really struggled. He could have a big year.

It's all on paper though and all theoretical until Wilson starts seeing what these guys can do in camp.

It's why I said most often. I know they are going to line up all over the place. Hell you could see them  at 1 and 2I and try and absolutely murder the center of the line on some downs. I was just curious what "base" looks like in your mind. No right or wrong answers here.
