Because he was so successful here doing things a bit out of the box with such a focus on the running game, he tried to do the same thing in Atlanta. He had a kick ass roster here too. But his offensive system worked very well with the talent he had.

I'd like to know who the fuck in the organization thought that going with Marcus Mariota in 2022 and Desmond Ridder in 2023 was a viable strategy at the qb position. I really think he prioritized running the type of offense he did here because it kindve made a name for him. He learned only passing 25 times a game doesn’t work when you don’t have a QB playing at the insane level that RT was in 2019 & 20.
freakingeek
Art was having a bad day. And then they fired him.
freakingeek
“Decisions like this are never easy and they never feel good,” Falcons owner Arthur Blank said in a statement. “We have profound respect for Coach Smith and appreciate all the hard work and dedication he has put into the Falcons over the last three years. He has been part of building a good culture in our football team, but the results on the field have not met our expectations. After significant thought and reflection, we have determined the best way forward for our team is new leadership in the head coaching position.”
flaming_thumbtack
He got too cute as a HC, but he was a great OC here. He's really good at getting the most out of mediocre personnel. I don't think we should plan on Levis as QBOTF, but I do think that if decide to roll with him next year, he'd have a much better chance of succeeding with Smith on the staff. Chig and Spears also seem like pretty natural fits for his offense. Maybe go out and snag a deep threat in FA and draft a WR in the first two rounds (alongside an LT), and I could see our offense moving up at least to the middle of the pack next year. SleepingTitan
It's as unfair to judge Art by his roster as it is to judge Vrabel by his. I'd take Art back as OC/AHC in a heartbeat. He would be a good backup HC if that blade ever falls.
Mercalius
Bring him back immediately IMO. Title him however you want, but if Vrabel stays, improvements on the coaching staff must be made. This would be an improvement. Fair circumstances or not, Kelly didn’t cement himself as the answer at OC. Let them collaborate with whatever coaching titles the team decides, but Smith would be a good get-back for a team whose offense has regressed since he left. GLinks
Sometimes fired HCs cycle down two spots. I wonder if they return him as TE coach, but would they cycle Dews or Outten around or out if they weren’t prepared to make him assistant head coach of the offense? titanskick8851
If Vrabel is here, bring him back as Asst HC/Sr. Offensive Assistant with his focus being Red Zone! That is where we have fallen off dramatically since he left. Dews was awful at it this year.
