The worst was when an AC-130 demolished a hospital in Afghanistan https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kunduz_hospital_airstrike There’s a massive difference between mistakes made by people on the ground versus the intentional targeting of civilians as a military strategy. Adding to this, from what I read the Russian military is top-heavy with regards to command and control even on tactical strikes. They are not proactive , only follow orders, etc. Therefore, the targeting of civilians is much more likely a feature not a bug of their military operations. There's top-down intent from their leadership to do this. Hard to believe just how fixated Putin has become on his goal of crushing Ukraine. He will not be here 25 years from now when the hatred will rage on in the next generation affected directly from this. It has been very interesting digging into the commonalities of the Russian ethos versus the average conservative in the US. Both love to claim patriotism and nationalism while at the same time constantly extolling that they’re indeed the true victims of history. That was tangential but I find it peculiar how many similarities I find between the two sides. Back on topic, Putin has been exposed as a military novice. He truly thought Ukraine, a country of 40 million people, one with a strong history in warfare, would topple within days. Reports are coming out about Russian soldiers turning on their commanders. The top down strategy you noted is a huge problem in warfare, one the US doesn’t encounter very often since we teach each soldier to follow orders while maintaining autonomy. That goes for every squad from the bottom up.
