They also thought they had more time b/c they thought Trump was going to win re-election. Incidentally Russia is one of the primary causes for corruption in the Ukrainian government. It's how they operate and what they're trying to do w/ our government. Then Biden won and came in and restored aid to Ukraine against Russia so Russia had no choice but to try and go in w/ force to take out the government before all of the US aid arrived. They thought they could be in and out fast like w/ Crimea. But the Ukrainians stood firm against them and bought enough time for the West to give them more aid. In short, why go in w/ force when they had an ally in the White House withholding aid and helping them pressure the Ukrainian government. What they wanted was a Russian stooge in power anyway like they have in the other governments around them. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump broke with US policy and suggested he was OK if Russia kept the Ukrainian territory. Russia had Trump undermining our ties with NATO, eliminating vast economic sanctions against Russia that had been put in place by Obama, and withholding defense funding meant for Ukraine. The longer that goes on, the easier it would be for Russia to weaken Ukraine.
