The economy added 253,000 jobs in April, according to data released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It’s a surprising increase at a time when many indicators were pointing to a slowdown in the job market.

The unemployment rate fell to 3.4% — matching a 53-year low hit in January — from 3.5% the month before. The labor force participation rate held steady at 62.6%.

Unemployment dipped sharply for Black workers, declining to 4.7% in April from 5% in the previous month. Similarly, the unemployment rate among Hispanic workers declined to 4.4% last month from 4.6%.

For Asian American workers, the unemployment rate held steady at 2.8%, as it was in March.

“Unemployment rates remain low across the board and historically low for Black workers,” said Valerie Wilson, director of the Economic Policy Institute’s program on race, ethnicity and the economy.

With the overall unemployment rate under 4%, the difference in rates between racial demographic groups is also narrowing, she added.

Yeah, it's rhetorical, but as with any problem, there's more than than 1 solution. Easing the process for legal migrants, in turn, reduces the number of those desperate enough to skirt the law to enter 

 

Most problems have multiple angles of attack. I'd think a super successful businessman like @LongTimeFan would understand that. Why is it so hard to give a thumbs up to that while still thinking more could be done at the border?

President Joe Biden and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Monday will announce a proposal for a new rule that would examine mandating airlines to compensate and cover expenses for customers facing “controllable airline cancellations” or delays, according to a White House official.

 

“When an airline causes a flight cancellation or delay, passengers should not foot the bill,” Buttigieg said in a statement. “This rule would, for the first time in US history, propose to require airlines to compensate passengers and cover expenses such as meals, hotels, and rebooking in cases where the airline has caused a cancellation or significant delay.”

 

Biden and Buttigieg will also announce that the department is launching an expanded Airline Customer Service Dashboard at FlightRights.gov, which shows which airlines “offer cash compensation, provide travel credits or vouchers, or award frequent flyer miles and cover the costs for other amenities,” according to the official.
