Alcibiades
I figure this is loosely football related, since there will be some people on that beat affected. https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2020-11-05/espn-layoffs-walt-disney-covid I'm not sure why they are doing this, when covid ends today, per POTUS. Too political? It's a joke! In reality, the article cites a lot of sports not happening or being delayed over the last year. March Madness is an obvious example. But the NFL, if anything, is keeping sports reporters afloat right now, as are any other sports that have been able to continue to play. Part of this is a move to streaming as well. No1TitansFan
DIsney is bleeding money, they're not releasing movies that they paid big bucks to make, WDW is operating at 25 %, Cali won't let them open DL and ratings are way down on ESPN. They borrowed a bunch of money at the start of this, but they've bled through most of it. They're laying off people right and left in the parks division, so it's not surprising they're doing the same at ESPN.
rns90
ESPN/ABC had awful ratings for the NBA final as well.

Callidus
The fact ESPN still exists is more surprising to me. They are the radio shack of sports media.

I didn't watch a complete half of the NBA playoffs. I didn't watch a full inning of the WS. I just can't get into the lack of fans. The NFL is different for me because, well you know, I'm a Titans fanatic. Covid had done a number on us and it's heating up for a huge second wave. Supernope
They do this every year or two. This is how we lost the bulbous John Clayton.
Starkiller
ESPN's problem is people cutting the cord. People who didn’t give a shit about sports but had Comcast or DirecTV or whatever TV service had to carry ESPN. Cord cutters are going up, especially this year with the pandemic and people trying to cut costs.

Most networks have their own sports station. Fox is trying to own everything. I was never a baseball fan, and lost interest in the NBA a long time ago. Nothing compares to those old matchups with the Celtics, Lakers, Bulls, Pistons, etc. I watch some college football, but lost interest in college BB. Not even a NASCAR fan anymore. Guess age has some to do with that. Yeah, the NBA sucks now. I just have no interest in watching guys jack up endless amounts of 3 pointers. I'm on the opposite of college basketball vs college football. I find it difficult to watch college football now because the games are so freaking long now. It should not take close to four hours to play/broadcast a 60 minute game. That and the defenses are awful there--especially in the big 12. If ESPN didn't broadcast the games, no one would watch because most of their other programming is awful and shit.
