AFC Championship Week: Titans @ Chiefs

In the past two weeks, the Titans D has faced the NFL's  #1 and #7 scoring offenses on the road and held them to 12 and 13 points respectively.      The Chiefs are the league's #5 scoring offense.....but these teams have already seen each other once this year;   the familiarity should make for an interesting rematch.

The way I see it, the Titans already have a pretty good idea what the Chiefs want to do on offense.   But the Titans defense has had at least three significant upgrades since that week 10 matchup against the Chiefs.

As Oman already pointed out....both Casey and Jayon Brown were inactive for that last Chiefs game.   Casey's absence that day forced Jeffrey Simmons to shoulder a full load just a couple weeks after coming off the NFI list;   he simply wasn't ready for 45-50 snaps per game and was largely ineffective.

Fast forward to this week:  Casey is in full-on playoff beast mode.  Meanwhile,  Simmons' decreased workload (30-35 snaps/game) allows him be full strength on every snap .....and the guy is a problem .    The Titans' DL should have a much bigger presence than they did in week 10.

Week 10 was the defense's first game without Malcom Butler;   Adoree and LeShaun Sims started on the outside that day.    This time around it's Adoree and Tramaine Brock.....a definite upgrade over Sims.    (Speaking of which.....after taking a couple games to get settled in, Brock has really played well.   He's clearly the team's second-best outside corner and makes Butler's absence far more manageable.)

Jayon Brown was still sidelined with a groin injury in week 10.    We obviously don't know yet his status for this week.... but getting him back in any capacity would be huge.  The Chiefs didn't have to deal with him at all in week 10 and still lost.

The Titans D was short-handed and badly overmatched in week 10 but made just enough plays to keep the game within striking distance for the offense.   The Chiefs offense can expect tougher matchups this time around from impact players who weren't even on the field last time.

I think the key is physical play.  The Chiefs seem like such a finesse team that I think if you start knocking them around early and they make a couple of mistakes, the Titans can get up and play their game.  If the Titans fall behind or try to play head up with the Chiefs, I don't think they have the horses to do it.  These guys just put up 51.  They got down 24 points and still came back and trounced the Texans.  The Titans will have to be every bit as fiery as they've been the past two weeks.

The Titans have to control the clock.  Also, the play action passes should be available moreso than the last two games, it would be nice for Tannehill to get it going early.

The Chiefs offense is unreal though, pressure, pressure, pressure seems to be the key.

Going to say it again. Have to weather the storm early and not get too far behind as the Chiefs offense is clicking on all cylinders. The only way the Chiefs can limit Henry is to get ahead so the Titans have to throw a lot. Even so Tannehill is playing well enough they will still score points.

Yeah, but you know what? [holds up 2004 AFC Championship box score] This one, this one right here... this was my dream, my wish. And it didn't come true. So I'm taking it back. I'm taking them all back.

Mahomes is going to be way more accurate than Lamar Jackson.  And those receivers will catch the balls that hit them in the shoulder.

Pees isn’t going to play the “dare the shit QB to make deep throws” defence.
