That's on poor roster construction and maybe coaching. That's why I keep saying that Payton should not have a job. I still think they'll run the ball a lot and have the same basic offense. They just improved the speed and overall talent on the outside so make things better for the passing game. And as others have said the biggest difference between last year and this year offensively will be less max protect on pass plays to give Mariota more weapons. If we do as well as we did last year, I think we'd keep him, even though people would be crying to aim higher. This is why I started the thread I did, this draft class totally took me by surprise. I thought we were basically sticking to last year's model. I knew we needed to add an "X" to add the downfield element that you need in a power running offense, but I thought that was coming in FA. Then it became clear we were taking one of the big 3 but I thought the rest of the draft would sort of be like the Ravens, a blue collar, physical type group, but then we double downed on playmaking & speed. It was an interesting approach. I'm wondering if we just filled some weak spots or if this is sort of a shift in how JR wants to build the team, based on his QB & other things he saw last year. All they did in offense was upgrade positions to make the offensive system more effective. They added a true X reciever, replaced our slot reciever with a better one, A future replacement for Delanie because he's getting old, And a Huge swing man on OL. The offensive system is the same. Mularkey said he plans to run EXOTIC SMASHMOUTH and that's what he's going to run. Run it down people's throats effectivly and that will open up the passing game. Which will be more effective with competent WRs. If anything the run game will improve because defenses will have to account for the WR on every play and can't stack the box as much. It means the defenses will have to respect the pass more Instead of stacking the box. That opens up the run game more. Mariota averaged 30 attempts a game last year and You will see the same next year. Possible he will jump to 35 but that's not a drastic offensive change. What you will notice is that the passing game will be more effective than last season so his completion % will take a significant jump. Mularkey has said Time and time again he wants to play hard nose power football. Everyone here is acting like he's going to turn the offense into the Saints or Ravens offense and throw it 40-45 times a game just because we have an X reciever now.. and that's ridiculous. Marcus was to effective with play action to go away from our base offense. If anything we may see more passing out of our base set and on first down. Yeah Robinson approached Roseman about it at the combine or something and asked about Demarco's availability. Roseman gave him permission to contact Murrays agents and Murray said he wanted to come to Tennessee. And then we all know what happened after that.
