Its weaksauce Yup. The reason there is a debate on if McCarthy and Payton are good coaches is the fact that those two QBs have been criminally disappointing in terms of rings. And LOL at people bashing Mularkey for by saying he's not putting Mariota in a position to succeed but then justify that those QBs are in a position to succeed? With defenses that bad, no one is in a position to succeed... its the textbook definition of winning in spite of the coaching. If someone believes that for Mularkey (which is comical) at least be consistent by saying pretty much every coach in the NFL besides Belicheck puts their guys in a bad position
Jamalisms
There's only a debate among morons, especially for McCarthy. Which is a good percent of fans, sadly.
scine09
At least the Packers get to the playoffs under McCarthy. The fact that Payton still has a job is almost criminal.

And if they say they wouldn't sign up for that they're lying. Some of us have waited most of our lives to see the franchise win a Super Bowl. And now 1 won't be good enough? Come on Do you not think Packer fans and Saints fans are disappointed that their HOF QBs have only been in one SB? Of course they are annoyed at it and it is a legit disappointment with how good those guys are. I'd give you a million dollars if you could find a Packer fan in WI that thinks 1 Lombardi during Aaron's career will be enough. Mariota isn't close to their level (yet, hopefully) so it's not quite an apt comparison.
Jamalisms
We only have among the best regular season teams in history, make the playoffs every year and have won the Super Bowl and were in true contention for it all years we didn't. FAILURE!!!!! Fans are stupid.

I think the offense has been fine but if you don't think anything needs to be changed thats comical. Even if it is just coaching personnel but that falls on McCarthy, a coach doesn't work 3 hours a week only Sundays. Capers is awful and needs to be fired. Your ONLY gripe with Mularkey must be the playcalling obviously if you think McCarthy is a good coach. Mularkey, erm sorry JRob, has put together a hell of a roster and staff. The same must be for Ted Thompson? Fans are the only people dumb enough to think that JRob is the mastermind and has no major input from Mularkey in building this team. But their expectations are going to be different to begin with because of the history of the franchise. Saints fans shouldn't be. That franchise was the laughing stock of the league in the late 70's/early 80's and was pretty much a joke with a few exceptions before Brees got there. The fact that they won that title changes the entire feel of the franchise's history.
Number9
Two days ago, I read the Jackson thread. A basic putdown of the guy started a few pages in. The video showed him returning kicks and an interception for a TD. The thread had him a midget playing off coverage too little to play press. Now, our three win team gets a new coach who manages to get the team to within a week of making the playoff and we are deciding what he has to do to get fired. I know we got to talk about something. This is like going into a factory that was one of the lowest producers in the company and a new manager has it producing like the best factories in the industry. Then you start laying out a plan of how you will fire the manager if he hits any production problems. The Titans are being called a sleeper, the team expected to show up next among the elites. None of these forecasts say if they just get rid of the coach, then they are going to win the SB.

Second of all, you'd have gathered that this was posted from the perspective of stupid fans you cite, not me who disagrees with it, if you had bothered to care. Which you didn't. Thirdly, despite almost everything going right and being in contention until the end of the year and getting a gift win... Mularkey didn't meet everyone's win expectations. Because Oilerman is stupid.

Ah so Oman is the only one who should be "disappointed", the reason you (and others) expected 5-6 wins max was because unnecessary hate for a coach, sorry GM, building a team around protecting the QB and not force him in an offense predicated on quickly reading the field and making a decision 13 games into his career. A legit gripe you can have about Mularkey at this point going forward is what? You and guys like russ are bitching just because you simply because you planted your flag so far down last preseason you can't come back.

The McCarthy and Payton clearly stemmed from the idea that expectations matter a lot for perception of coaching. This whole thread is about Mularkey potentially being on the hot seat going forward because we have much higher (and hopefully realistic) expectations of the team and will have a real barometer of what he can do with talent. As you said, it would have to be a catastrophic failure for him to get the ax because he exceeded so many expectations so greatly last year, even though to some it was solely because an "easy" schedule, health and Mariota winning in spite of coaching. I'm sure plenty will lay that on AAS liking him so much but until he legitly disappoints us there's no point in just assuming that AAS will meddle like people like to assume was the case with the GM search and Mularkey. I think we get to see Mularkey's full coaching potential now. This is by far the most talent he's ever had in any head coaching stint he's ever had. His built in excuse has been regime change (Jax and Tenn), bad front office and no QB (Buffalo) and horrible talent and short tenure (Jax). He loses all of those this year. I do think he's done well. We've been competitive, he's tailored the offense very well to develope MM and he kept the team focused last year. It seemed to me that all of the team bought in to what Mularkey was trying to do. We had great chemistry. I expect an pretty large jump in success next season unless injuries derail our season. We should compete for the division.
