Yes, but he also coached during the Marino era. He coached the dolphins from 70-95, which is crazy.

He actually won some stuff though...still not as crazy as Coach Ocho lasting as long as he did here.

It's not about saving face. Tunsil is starting at guard, and is being eased into the LT position. Johnson is 3rd team right now, BEHIND another rookie, who wasn't even drafted. It's a completely different situation. If Johnson were the backup to Woods, then it would be similar. He's being brought along. But he's behind another rookie, who wasn't drafted at all.

Different styles. The other Woods played in a 3-4 as a 0 tech. Johnson was a 1 tech penetrator in a 4-3. I'm not surprised it's taking him more time to learn how to 2 gap, because from the tape I saw he was never asked to do it.

Agreed. I'm not too worried about it in the long run. In the short term though, we'd all like to see our first two rounds of players on the field in their first season. If it takes him longer to learn the role, though, that's OK.

This is why I was surprised they didn't pick Jarran Reed if they wanted a pure nose.

I don't think they want a pure nose. They've shifted to more of an under look in a lot of their base sets with the NT playing a 1, but until the kid can 2 gap he's not a starter because they will ask him to do a lot of that as well.

Yeah I don't think they were looking for a pure nose either. Robinson mentioned Johnson's versatility when talking about the pick. Said he could play 5T. Possibly even 3T. I think the versatility played a factor. And Johnson offers more upside as a pass rusher then a typical NT that you have to take out on passing downs.

Hopefully he impresses in preseason it's not good when your 2nd round pick is behind an undrafted rookie on the depth chart.

Its still very early so it's not time to freak out but it doesn't look good at all he should be above him by default because of where he was drafted.

It makes you think he's struggling on the field or to pick up the defense. There has to be something to it. With that said He could still easily turn things around and get a significant amount of playing time this season. I was hoping he could be that guy that could generate pressure from the interior.

No he shouldn''t.

^This.  A year in the league under a new system is more valuable than anything most guys bring out of college.

The only exception would be a guy like Buckner going to a team that runs the same D-Line strategy he played for 4 years in college.

I'm all for the best man winning the job but it's never that simple.

If an undrafted rookie looks slightly better then a 2nd round pick in TC both in their rookie years but you only Have room for one of them on the team.

99% of the time who is staying?

The draft defiently holds weight on the depth chart, making the team, etc.

It's never as easy as the best man wins the spot.

Right. I'm confused because the quote referred to his first practice with the Dolphins - I assumed they meant his first practice in 1970.

I was not clear.  It might not have been Shula's very first practice.  More likely the first practice that Marino was on the team. Shula and Marino had a history before he was drafted by the Dolphins.  Memory slips a bit at 74 yo.  Sorry.

I was at the 'Phins very first season game in their very first season.  A friend of my first wife named Joe Auer ran back the opening kickoff for a TD.  I suspect it is the only time that the first regular season kickoff of a brand new franchise resulted in a TD.  I remained a fan of the 'Phins until our team came to Tennessee.  Until my brother died two years ago, he and I went to every Titans-Dolphins game here in Nashville and there in Miami.  He dressed in his Miami garb, me in my Tennessee garb.  It was a wonderful tradition.  I miss him greatly.

pro

him

  • 2 weeks later...

Mularkey said in his press conference today that Austin Johnson has stepped up his game lately. He was directly asked whether he thinks Johnson's improvement is due to being behind Antwaun Woods on the first depth chart.... he said yes.

It's nice that Johnson is looking better, but needing that external motivation in your rookie camp is not a good sign for long-term success.

In an offseason without Derrick Henry and Tajae Sharp, we would be freaking out about Johnson's lack of motivation and Dodd's injury.

Is it that he needed motivation or maybe he was just over matched with the ones due to lack of experience and needing a little more body maturation (strength wise) to be able to hold his own?

I think Johnson will be fine and will just end up as a guy who starts slow and gets better each week.

Antwaun Woods was above him for SECOND team, not FIRST team. Johnson was rated highly for his size/strength/athleticism combo, so I don't think he needs more "body maturation" than a UDFA like Woods. Mularkey just clearly indicated it was a problem with motivation.
