Rather than body maturation, I'm thinking it's entirely about Johnson speeding up the development on his hand usage. He didn't have any 'extra' time to sort that out. He found himself struggling for reps right away and responded by significantly getting better with his mitts asap. Homer alert: The great news that's potentially been lost in the disappointment with Austin story is that Antuan Woods was a freebie and might turn into a solid depth player at a tough position. The actual homer alert: Making hypothetical excuses for Johnson about hand usage, when you've never actually seen him play up close or heard any critique of his hand usage. I'll call BS on you actually finding the press conference video (which by the way are usually truncated) when they finally post it. I think initimated that I was speculating some, but yes, Hand usage by Austin was cited by JRob with the announcers in last week's game, iirc. He didn't say Johnson needed the motivation, and he didn't say anything about him not working hard enough or whatever. We aren't a strictly 2 gap front, not even close. If we were we would be limiting our best player. You build the defense around your talent. I was always under the assumption that DLB's system primarily had a 3 tech that was a one gap, get up the field pass rusher & the nose & 5 tech played 2 gap. Of course teams are in nickel more than half the time & I assume when Klug is in there with Casey they're both in 1 gap, but so far this preseason it's been Jones in nickel, whose actually had some serious bull rushes. I guess there's probably some plays in the nickel with Casey & Klug where they're to get up field & some where Jones is in with Casey & his job is to occupy an additional blocker, opening things up for the blitzers. DLB runs a true 2 gap 3-4 and plays base more than any other DC over the past 20 years. It was Horton that liked to use a slashing 3T to disrupt offenses. It will be interesting to see if Casey's role changes now that DLB is calling plays. Interesting link that seems to show DLB adjusting to the role of the DEs in his defense.
