The perceived advantage is that all it will take is a close in stab from the knife and you are mortally wounded. That is simply not the case. Assuming you can land a great knife thrust on your first try as soon as you get inside, that isn't killing me on the spot. Speaking of arenaline, you may not even feel it. The difference in incapacity between the person that absorbs a decent but not critical bat strike versus a decent but not critical knife strike is not as great as it is being built up. People are underestimating the crippling affect of a decent, strategic bat hit and overestimating the effect of a fairly clean, but not critical knife strike. The problem is when the knife guy is in your range and already stabbed you, you can't easily take another swing. Your priority now is get the knife guy back off you and back to the bat's effective swing range. Use it as a bar to push the attacker away, use it to jab the gut, face. But if the knife is in, a simple twist causes a lot more damage and sudden drop of bp will drop the majority of people quickly. First priority becomes grab and control the wrist so the knife can't do more damage. Edited May 19, 2017 by GLinks

GLinks
Now, for the bat, I agree, you can spread your hands out and hold it so that it allows you to jab from either end, or bring it down or up to deflect incoming knife strikes. That gives you speed and control over your movements with short, quick bursts, and reset. Hitting someone hard in the legs, knees, ankles, is a great way to disable an opponent without doing head trauma. If I'm fighting, my basic premise is, even unarmed, there are a lot of ways to take an opponent's ability to stand away from them so they are not getting up quickly, or for a while. Different ball game after that. Head shots get the glory, but there's a lot more targetable surface area below the waist that people are not as apt to defend. You take down the foundation, you take down the entire house.

Anyone with a decent reaction is going to at least try to duck. further, its easy to know the direction the bat swing is coming from. if you can get an arm high enough you can spread the blow across your tricep, forearm, and shoulder. minimizing the damage to individual parts and protecting the head. if you are close enough to get hit you are also close enough to stab. so any non-knockout blow basically equals lots of vital exposed areas for the bat-bearer. two hands on a bat = zero body/neck/face protection. trying to poke with a bat equals your bat getting grabbed and rendered useless. the only option is hitting a homerun. and anybody with the slightest quicks is going to make you miss. and then you are half-twisted with a bat trying to recover while your kidneys are sliced open. Sure you can. Try "jabbing" at someone with a bat that is holding a knife fighting you to the death. Do you realize how hard it would be to jab someone in the face with the end of a bat? It's laughable

Sure, hitting someone with a bat with one arm would cause "pain". Unfortunately causing someone pain doesn't quit do the job in a fight to the death. You could stab or cut someone to shreds in seconds with a knife.

pat
An aluminum bat can be swung from the arms / wrists. No mobility sacrifice. Agree that reach is meaningless without footwork. Most people don't know how to move. The right weapon is the one you can move with.
Justafan
Watching youtube videos i'm seeing dudes get hit full on with a baseball bat anywhere but the head and they keep going like it's no big deal. I still think it's a relatively close fight but I stand by my original assessment that the advantages of the knife are equal to the advantages of the bat. Back to the basics and what I originally thought, knife it is!

Do you realize how hard it would be to jab someone in the face with the end of a bat? It's laughable Jabbing would be more so to keep the distance and keep the advantage in position. I think you have to think about how the person with the bat is fighting. If he is the primary aggressor then sure the knife is better because countering with one stab could end it. If the person with a bat is fighting defensively only way the knife is getting close enough to stab you is if the knife is faster than you and bull rushes you. To me the strategy is pretty simple with the bat. Keep the distance and attack the hands. You can't hold a knife with broken hands. If im the knife im bull rushing the guy with the bat trying to slash him. If the bat doesn't have good footwork or counter moves it's easily over. so I guess my answer relies on how the person opposite me plans on fighting which you don't know lol.
