Tom Gower Clearly does not like Zach Mettenberger

Mett is nowhere near as immobile as they say.

Good to see WG making a rare cameo appearance here, rather than hiding under his bed to keep from running into THE_TITAN.

Who incidentally gave WG's nuts to his gf to wear as earrings for Valentines Day.

What has he done to prove otherwise?

Part of me hopes it's because he's getting over his ACL injury.

Your expectations are too high for Mett then.

Maybe.

But I just don't think that he's as immobile as the media would like everyone to think.

I saw him escape a sack against the Eagles and fire a dart into the end zone that one of the WR's dropped. That's all the mobility I need to see from him.

Mett has been compared to Drew Bledsoe, a QB many see as one of the most immobile of all time. More than Brady and Manning.

To be that immobile as a rookie is concerning. You guys need to stop denying his weaknesses because you want so badly for him to succeed.

His mobility is a problem. And will only work unless he's elite on the cerebral side of things. If he isn't great at making proper pre-snap adjustment as TGO said and if he isn't above average in the short game ... we're in trouble.

I actually agree that if he's good at making the proper pre-snap adjustments and isn't above average in the short game that he's in trouble. I really do think his lack of mobility isn't as big of a deal in this offense as some think, and he plays the position exactly how Wis wants a QB to play it.

big, Mett has shown he can shift around the pocket and not simply stand there paralyzed.

The guy is not Luck or Big Ben in his elusiveness, but the guy can move around enough.

Kurt Warner and Philip Rivers aren't exactly very fleet of foot either. I agree with big2033 that Mett is going to have really work on the mental side of the game, but it's not impossible

It was clear to anyone that watched that was the best rookie QB the only one worth comparing him with would have been Carr.

Comparing his record and wins is comical he was a rookie QB on a very bad team what would you expect?

He overachieved last season and will only grow in the offense you would have to be stupid not to be excited to get that kind of play from a 6th round pick.

I don't put any thought in where someone was drafted. I watch what they do on the field and I think he done more then enough to be the starter next year and see what he does when he has a whole offseason with the offense and we get him some help around him.

When the play is dead or breaks down ... what does he do? That's the question.

Most of the time, he's waited too long or been so slow in movement that he couldn't even move outside the pocket to throw it out of bounds. He gets sacked.

So if he's going to play like that... he's going to need to make big pre-snap judgement before the play happens.

That's my knock on him. He doesn't really create anything right now. It's why I said we need a really strong run game to compliment him.

Not even Tom Brady gets clean looks all the time. But he always finds a way.

We'll see if he gets better.

If we could clean up the penalties (in particular on the offensive line) I think Mett's numbers and the offensive numbers in general would improve. I have little faith in the coaching staff, since they allowed the penalties to plague us all season.

Also, Mett needs to improve on getting the ball out faster. Took too many unnecessary sacks that put us in an unfavorable down and distance.

I think we finish below .500 next season. I just want to see some improvement from Mett, if not, move on.

Have you ever seen the sack numbers for mobile guys vs pocket guys? Someone needs to show them to Ctm.

Yeah, he's immobile. That's a positive trait in this offense, especially under Ken Wisenhunt. Joe Flacco is also immobile and doesn't have much escapability. Mett did show at times the ability to navigate the pocket. Holding the ball too long is an effect of being a rookie and not being able to read the defense and diagnose where the ball needs to go fast enough. This is very typical. If he doesn't improve in this area by year 3, then I'd start to worry. This is a complex offense. It also requires the QB to stand in there and deliver the football to the correct spot.

The offense in general needs a good OL to work. Mett far exceed expectations considering the circumstances. The kid is unflappable.

Going through another year with a rookie QB will just make Wis/Webster look even worse and it would get them both fired. I really hope they're not stupid enough to do that. There is virtually zero chance of a rookie QB (esp. from this class) coming in here and winning more than 5 or 6 games even with a great offseason.

Good post. One of the big criticisms of Mett, and one I find a bit unfair, is that it takes him a long time to go through his reads. And it does, it takes pretty much every rookie QB ever a longer time to get through reads.

Whisenhunt runs a complex offense & it looked to me that he didn't hold anything back for Mett, he got the entire playbook, which is impressive. I think just the fact that he's actually going through his reads & not taking off if his 1st read is covered is very promising.

The people who don't like Mett see a kid who takes too long to go through his reads. I see a kid who has impressive, innate ability to stay calm in the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield at all times.

I don't blame anyone for not trusting Mett yet. Aside from being a late round pick with plenty of red flags going into the draft, he never really did great during the regular season (not all his fault, mind you). He was great in preseason, but that's not enough in its own.

I'm perfectly comfortable naming him the starter and not drafting a QB at 2. But I can see why some people might not be.

Also, if the QB options were really good instead of Winston and Mariota, I'd still consider going QB.

Mett showed a lot of good, but a lot of bad as well.  I though everyone got so happy about him during his Sr year with Cameron, I simply recall him his Jr. year where'd he'd make an awesome throw followed up by a completely bone-headed play. Has been hard for me to forget those games I saw.  And I really don't think you can underestimate that he had 3 WRs (including Mr All-World Odell Beckham Jr), 2 RBs (including Jeremy Hill) and a 3rd rd Guard all playing with him as Srs that same year.  Just overwhelming talent at skill positions.   Might have led to some bad habits, like standing in the pocket all day when you got a line like theirs protecting you. I think if he can speed up his clock and increase his pocket awareness, he has a legit shot to be a decent QB.  More concerned about those 2 things than mobility. His arm is solid and not an issue at all.

That all being said, if you could combine the best traits of Mariota and Winston into one guy, I'd draft him at 2 in a sec.  Of course, he'd probably go #1.  Just not thrilled with either guy that high, even if one or both do turn out to be great QBs down the road.  I think the best reason the FO takes a QB high is if they have decided they simply don't believe in Mett as a worker and leader based on what they saw last year (I have no idea).  Otherwise you roll with him and pick another guy midrounds and/or get a decent vet in FA and move on.
