Guest
Mett also has his own limitations. For one, he's extremely immobile. That's leads to sacks, forced fumbles and injuries. In addition that limits his ability to extend plays when the pocket breaks down. Yeah, he's immobile. That's a positive trait in this offense, especially under Ken Wisenhunt. Joe Flacco is also immobile and doesn't have much escapability. Mett did show at times the ability to navigate the pocket. Holding the ball too long is an effect of being a rookie and not being able to read the defense and diagnose where the ball needs to go fast enough. This is very typical. If he doesn't improve in this area by year 3, then I'd start to worry. This is a complex offense. It also requires the QB to stand in there and deliver the football to the correct spot. The offense in general needs a good OL to work. Mett far exceed expectations considering the circumstances. The kid is unflappable. Going through another year with a rookie QB will just make Wis/Webster look even worse and it would get them both fired. I really hope they're not stupid enough to do that. There is virtually zero chance of a rookie QB (esp. from this class) coming in here and winning more than 5 or 6 games even with a great offseason. The fumbling will correct itself when he learns to hold the ball higher. The comment on extending plays is laughable. It's far more important to have pocket awareness and be able throw from it then it is to extend plays.

It's far more important to have pocket awareness and be able throw from it then it is to extend plays. Mett's ability to move within the pocket made him look like a master compared to Jake Locker. Locker looked like a chicken with his head cut off running in circles. Mett would just sidestep a guy or evade the pressure by stepping up. The times he got caught hit from his blindside and fumbled he just needs to secure the ball or throw it away a split second before. That's one of the few fixable issues a QB can have. Unless you've got a great OL, the QB in this offense is going to take some sacks.

Just because pocket awareness is more important than extending plays outside the pocket, doesn't deny that extending plays is also an important trait. He's limited in this regard. As far as fumbling goes, he's been playing QB at various levels for a while now. Wonder why he hasn't learned to hold the ball higher by now? Somehow I suspect that isn't the complete answer for this problem.

They are usually navigating within the pocket, not running around outside of the pocket.

WG53
I'm thinking Ken Wisenhunt and Ruston Webster disagree with you Wouldn't be the first time they were wrong.
Guest
How about Philip Rivers, who had tied for his best statistical season under Whisenhunt? Yeah how about him? He wasn't running around outside of the pocket much. Btw, one of the biggest things that helped Rivers in Wisenhunt's system is his pre-snap adjustments and using Wis's system to adjust the protections in a favorable way. Rivers is 2nd only to Manning in making pre-snap adjustments.
WG53
Whether he is or isn't he wasn't "mostly dismal." Sounds like you Didn't watch the games.
big2033
Mett has been compared to Drew Bledsoe, a QB many see as one of the most immobile of all time. More than Brady and Manning. To be that immobile as a rookie is concerning. You guys need to stop denying his weaknesses because you want so badly for him to succeed. His mobility is a problem. And will only work unless he's elite on the cerebral side of things. If he isn't great at making proper pre-snap adjustment as TGO said and if he isn't above average in the short game ... we're in trouble. scine09
I'll be honest. I was never a Bledsoe fan. However, he was always a fairly solid QB although at times overrated. On the other hand, if someone said you can have Drew Bledsoe for the next 10 years I would pass and find someone else. My expectations for Mettenberger are better than Bledsoe, Collins and Testaverde. If he's not then it's going to be very hard to win consistently with him. WG53
Your expectations are too high for Mett then.
