Jared Cook and the Aaron Hernandez Deal

If Hernandez is the guy we are comparing Cook to remember Hernandez is a shitty blocker as well. Hernandez is more of a WR than Cook is. I think what we saw at the end of the year is how Cook can perform on a fairly consistent basis if they get him the ball. As stated Cook's blocking has improved. They need to make a reasonable attempt to extend him. Maybe not quite what Hernandez got but maybe we can get him for closer to the $5 mil per year range.

Also everyone seems to think just about any TE is better. Finely for example isn't even as good IMO. Davis wasn't crap his fist three years and last year he had 67 receptions for 792 yards. Cook could be heading in a similar direction with his best years ahead of him.

Ill have to find the stat, but I read somewhere that 73% of the plays Hernandez was involved in were pass plays

Finley can't block either

Neither can Dallas Clark and he's carved a good career

It took Clark six seasons to have a season with more receiving yards (848) than Cook

It took him five seasons to have a season with more receptions (58) than Cook

http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/4482/dallas-clark

Just a few other examples

There's been talk in the media recently, and locally here on Titans Report, that the Titans will be looking toward possibly locking up Jared Cook to a contract extention. And now that Aaron Hernandez

Cook (so far) is no Gronkowski, Hernandez, or Gates. Just because he's athletic doesn't mean he's a great player. First of all, he's pretty one dimensional because he has never been a decent blocker.

Cook is likely to get a lot more looks with Locker. His speed is a stretch the field type and not quick, timed routes which suited MH better. I think we will probably see good things from him this s

Finley was the most inconsistent TE in the league last season

Had 16 dropped passes

Davis was crap his first three years, you expect a lot more production from a #6 overall pick

And he got chewed out infamously by Singletary

He was on his way to bustville until that moment turned him around

Did anyone catch Vernon Davis in the playoffs last season against the Saints? That type of play is what I don't expect to ever see from Cook. Who cares that his first three seasons were flops, since he has now turned into a top 5 pass catching TE?

Davis against Saints: 7 catches 180 yards 2 TD

Cook against Jags: 8 catches 169 yards (franchise record) 1 TD

This isn't a fight-or-it-in-traffic grab, but it's pretty damn spectacular and most fans seem to have totally glossed over the catch. Shows he's got the ability to adjust his momentum, jump, and snatch balls extended from his body.

He ran a 4.45 range coming out. He was never a 4.3 speed kinda guy.

Really? I read somewhere he ran a 4.3...

In TSN's draft preview back in 2009 they had Cook listed with 4.37 speed, I think it was an unofficial time he ran at South Carolina.

False.. Cook sealed the edge on one of the CJ TD runs this preseason.. He gets to the edge and gets his blocks.. He has become a much better blocker..

Preseason is the keyword. Cook is not money on 3rd down the way a true WR or pass catching TE is expected to be. Seems good for a change of field position every so often but not much else. "as good as a punt"

Every source I can find with the 4.37 time says "reportedly in 2007". He ran a 4.49 @ the combine.

There was talk he ran in the 4.3s while at SC but obviously nothing official.

Cook isn't that bad catching the ball so I don't get why people keep making that an issue.

Cook isn't that bad, but he isn't that good either. Hence the word *inconsistent*. Is he someone Jake can rely on to consistently catch the ball, especially when it's clutch time? If not, then it IS an issue.

This is basically the same old, "our guy sucks" and "their guys is a stud" mentality.

"our guy could never make a catch like Davis made in the playoffs"

Actually our guy made a spectacular catch the last pre-season game.

No it isn't. Don't be a fanboy. It's ok to root for a guy and be critical at the same time.

It's great that Cook made that spectacular catch. Ben Troupe make a spectacular play or two in the time he was here too. I hope he puts that kind of effort into every play, but I've seen him be mentally lazy too. The catch that was called out of bounds because he wasn't mindful of where the chalk was is just a small example..

Interesting that a spambot revived this thread (spam removed)....but the thread itself has a number of good points and is as relevant now as it was back in August.

The spam bot makes better points than some posters as well

Spam bots should go away with the board update. I'll try to do it tonight after the podcast.

Including the one that posted just before you in this thread?
