I think he's going to be excellent but it'll take time. Depending on how he looks there's nothing wrong with using a lottery ticket on a QB. If your starter isn't mentally tough enough to deal with competition then he isn't your franchise QB. Yeah I was definitely on board with taking Ward, he was the best prospect, he has a lot of talent. The biggest fear was changing his fundamentals which is always a risk bc the player has to get the change to be automatic and that takes time to get out of the brain and into the nervous system. He's only had one season, he's going to get at least 3 and he should unless he regresses, which seems unlikely. IsntLifeFunny

Honestly didn't even have to draft, could have brought in a udfa like Fagnano instead of wasting time with Hooker and Levis. I think QB production is highly influenced by surrounding talent at the college level and guys bust out all the time and other guys surprise. Can't hurt to give yourself more chances to hit. That's all I'm saying They brought in Hooker. They had 4 qbs in camp...
Number9
WATCH THE GAME!! I was watching PS LAR vs LAC. Herbert dropped back and threw a 65yd TD pass to start the game! WTF! What the f*ck is wrong with Cam? Herbert makes that shit look easy. I was watching the replay Herbert just dropped back-nobody was close to him and he hurled the ball to a wide open Jefferson who caught it, ran another 15yds-TD!! %*@#% CAM WARD. Completely different type of QB. He's excellent until things start to break down. Cam is the opposite type. He's more of a McNair style where he has to get into a rhythm and when things break down is when he's at his best. He's really struggled in the playoffs, but you can't to into those games against the best defenses/coaches with the dogshit OCs he's had. Vrabel exposed Roman back in 2019 as well. Herbert was a choker going back to college days. Will have to break through that ceiling himself...

cenj
I understand wanting a more regular investment in QB talent, but the reality is that reps are limited. QBs taken high in the draft get so much energy and so many resources spent on them. Drafting more QBs theoretically gives you more bites at the apple, but it doesn't work out that way in practice. There just aren't enough reps to go around. So unless that 3rd rounder is forced into a situation where they get all the starter reps, it's highly unlikely they develop into starter material. Teams also need their backups to be able to run the scout team. rns90

You havnet said to try and keep 3 and cut someone who made the 53. If you want a rookie or 2nd year player on the practice squad instead of hooker-.. I mean sure? but who gives a shit? Is there some story of a qb developing on the practice squad and becoming a starter? I've never heard it. What you're really talking about is keeping a rookie or young qb behind an established starter and develop them. That happens AFTER you have your starter asa an experienced, stable qb. Even then its a bit of a doubtful strategy if you want to win games if the qb goes down. rns90

Even then its a bit of a doubtful strategy if you want to win games if the qb goes down. Joe Fagnano, Jack Strand, and Jalon Daniels are all rookie udfa QBs who made NFL rosters this year. One is already the immediate backup. 2 teams have an established starter, 1 doesn't. Having an established starter isn't a prerequisite, in fact as was stated by another poster earlier, guys like Purdy and Romo came in situations where not having an established starter is why they were given a chance. But regardless of how good your starter is, evaluating fresh prospects and developing them is always a good idea. Its not far-fetched, it happened in 3 teams, all more successful teams, 2 with clearly more proven rosters than this organization, mind you. And they don't need starter reps to develop or show progress. Also about half of NFL teams carry 3 QBs on the active roster. Anyway, I think I've spent enough time on this topic.
