Cowboys hire Brian Schottenheimer as their new Head Coach

Recommended Posts

Cowboys are hiring offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach, Jerrry Jones tells ESPN. “Brian Schottenheimer is known as a career assistant,” Jones said. “He ain’t Brian no more. He is now known as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.”

Sources consider former #Bears head coach Matt Eberflus a prime candidate for the #Cowboys defensive coordinator job under new coach Brian Schottenheimer, per sources. Eberflus was a Cowboys assistant from 2011-17.

Not that I'm a big McCarthy guy but I'd love to hear how this hire is somehow a significant upgrade for the team.

And I would specifically like to hear it from the obviously senile owner who lately has been spending his time doing cameos on fictional mini-series.

He's not.

Cowboys fans will no doubt be thrilled by this turn of events

As much as I hear people complain about AAS, Jerry Jones makes her look a lot better.

Bottom line is that nobody established would want that job where Jerry is the hands on Owner/GM and Monday Morning HC

This is like a bunch of his hires aside from Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells.

Schottenheimer vs McCarthy is not a massive difference IMO and you at least keep the offense intact.

I don't know.  How l different and are Mularkey and Callahan to the coaches that Jerry hires?

I'll counter with, what experience/qualifications does Schottenheimer have to justify hiring him as a HC for any team? At least Mularkey was previously a head coach and the jury is still out on Callahan. We're talking one of the original NFL franchises in Dallas can't afford to hire an experienced head coach? AAS has some issues but her GM search shows me that she's learned a little something after making a few hiring mistakes.

I agree that he's doing a huge disservice to the fans and the talented rosters that he's put together in recent years by hiring empty suit HCs.  My point was simply that Amy hires HCs of the same or even lesser quality.

But as you said, the GM hire was great and she's a competent HC hire away from passing the low bar of Jerry Jones.

Actually, I take back what I said.  Schottenheimer coached 4 top 10 offenses in his career, as well as above average offenses in NY despite having Mark Sanchez as his QB.  He also never ended up in the bottom 5 in scoring despite some horrific QBs.

Now that he's fired Eberflus, he's a significantly better HC candidate than Callahan on paper.  And this was a guy just floundering around on staffs his entire career.  Highlighting exactly how bad the Callahan hire was.

You do realize that if we hadn't hired Callahan last year, he likely gets one of the other HC jobs, right?  Exactly who was lining up to hire Brian again?

Can you argue against Schottenheimer being a much better candidate on paper, considering he actually has play calling experience- for multiple top 10 offenses, at that?

Their demand has little implication, as NFL teams hire terrible coaches all of the time and that's why the is an average lifespan of 3 years.
