There's an argument technique where you use an existing, familiar battleground with a known reputation and point out how even they think someone else is X ... thereby helping to show how reasonable it is when you, yourself, also say that other person is X.

Sure it is. They're not willing to do it but the standard of what's reasonable doesn't change just because a large group of people are unreasonable.
