The Good News

Lots of disappointment today, but there were some good things that happened today:

1. Nick Folk - what a game. Started with a 50 yarder and hit all his FGs. Considering the instability of the past few years and the uncertainty in training camp that was a great sight to behold.

2. The running backs. While they were underused, the run game was effective - Derrick Henry still looks very good running and as good catching as he did last season. Spears also had some good plays, they are the most talented offensive position and are playing to their potential.

3. The defense. Olave, Thomas, and Shaheed are about as talented a trio you’ll find in the league, holding the Saints to 16 points on the road was encouraging for the remainder of the season.

4. Tannehill clearly did not look good out there, but he did look better in the second half than the first. He went from looking pretty lost to at least a competent QB and was completing third downs. Of course his performance was concerning, but the Saints are a dominant defense and it is week 1. You’d like to see him do better and out perform Carr. I do think they need to keep the run and pass more balanced, especially against such talented secondaries, and especially when the run game is being effective. Today looked like a Frank Reich special - stop running the ball for. I good reason. I like Tannehill a lot but don’t think he’s that guy to pass at will and march down the field without the run game, especially with the WR talent on the team. I expected some growing pains from the offense, and I do expect to see it improve so fingers are crossed.

Looking forward to week 2.

I'm not convinced that Vrabel's no starters in the preseason rule is a good one. We tend to come out very flat on offense in week 1. And we tend to lose. It's not the end of the world, but this was a very winnable game, if we did more than score FGs.

Vrabel doesn’t seem to be good at getting the team ready for week 1. He is now 2-4 in week 1 and we have lost 3 years in a row.  His preseason routine needs to change next year imo

It's an ongoing pattern and everyone too scared of guys getting hurt has to sack up. All players gotta be ready for NFL game speed after 6+ months of not having it.

I hate it. Preseason was created for a reason - to prepare players for the season. It’s become back end roster tryouts at best, and I’d think you’d see enough from camp to know who you like. Just get rid of the games if you’re not using them to get your team ready.

I'll share:

Back in college, I knew this one girl (she's now a married lesbian) who took a dude home from the bar.  Apparently, he was black-out drunk because after the deed was done, they passed out and he shit all up in her bed.  She was PISSED, even more so because it was a brand-new mattress!  (You know college students, it's not like we had money to blow through)

She stuck with him for a few weeks until she found out roaches were spreading from his things to her apartment.  I still laugh at that whole situation.

So yeah.  That's probably an analogy all up in itself, too.
