AP: Inside the meeting of Republican electors who sought to thwart Biden’s election win in Georgia

When Republicans gathered on Dec. 14, 2020, claiming to be legitimate electors casting the state’s 16 electoral votes for Donald Trump, they met at the Georgia Capitol in a room just upstairs from the building’s public entrance. A Trump campaign official asked for the electors’ “complete discretion,” telling them to say only that they were meeting with two state senators who were there.

“Your duties are imperative to ensure the end result — a win in Georgia for President Trump — but will be hampered unless we have complete secrecy and discretion,” Robert Sinners wrote in an email uncovered by investigators.

But reporters for The Associated Press and other news organizations noticed the Republicans entering the building and were eventually admitted into the room, where they photographed and recorded video of the proceeding. In the chaotic weeks after the 2020 election, the gathering’s significance wasn’t immediately clear. But it has emerged as a critical element to the prosecution of Trump and 18 others who were indicted by a Georgia grand jury in August for efforts to overturn Democrat Joe Biden’s narrow win in the state.

The case against Trump is literally open and shut. His guilt isn't even in question

It’s all going to be about the jury in all these cases. That and his hope he can delay them all and win the presidency again before he gets sent to prison.

The better these deals look for Powell and Chesebro, the worse it looks for Trump.

Willis isn't stupid.  She isn't giving out these sweet probation deals out of the goodness of her heart.  She's doing it because these two have a lot of evidence to incriminate Trump.

Exactly, people who went into the capitol got way worse sentences than these deals. They aren't getting these deals unless they are helping the prosecution a great deal.

Another factor in these plea deals is that there’s now no early version of the trial just for Chesebro and Powell. That means the defense teams for the other defendants no longer get to see in advance what the prosecution has on them and what Willis' strategy is in court.

The shitkickers generally had nothing to offer to the prosecution in exchange for a plea deal. As Powell and Chesebro can give inside info to Willis (and thus the DOJ now as well), they had some leverage to plead out.

Also, Powell and Chesebro only have a deal with GA. They haven’t been given any kind of deal by Jack Smith, as far as we know at least. So they could still face prosecution federally.
