He had his warts with the fumble and a drop but overall pretty impressive for a 5th round rookies debut. Treylon Burks not as much of a target but did put up a very nice YPR average. If he was also able to follow through on that blatant PI it would have been considered a special debut I think. This is probably very premature but it’s just a gut feeling. Hopefully he’ll put on some weight over the next off season. His route running seems so crisp. I think the titans top 2 WRs are settled for the foreseeable future. Phillips has incredible feet, combined with very smooth transitions to outs, ins, slants, etc. Not to much change of direction skills. It’s incredibly difficult for a DB to cover someone like that. It’s like they are smothered in grease, you just can’t stick with them. He had a 43% target rate in Week 1, which is just absurd. Shows Tannehill sees him beating every person who covers him. I loved his college tape and camp film, so I was already optimistic that he’d have an impact this year….but I was blown away with how comfortable and polished he looked in his NFL debut. I see him being another Derrick Mason type… creating separation at will, shredding defenses week in and week out, and drawing defensive holding calls on a regular basis as he puts DBs on their heels and they have to grab to avoid losing him. I was also quite happy with what little we saw of Burks, who’s obviously more of the physical, big-bodied AJB type that JRob and Vrabel are always drawn to. I was concerned the game might still be a bit too big for him in week one and he’d look lost at times….but he had a solid performance that would have been even bigger if not for being tackled on the deep ball that was a blatant DPI non-call. I suspect Philips will have a bigger overall impact this year…but I can see Burks putting up 500 yards and 4-5 TDs. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Vrabel/downing/Tannehill need to be looking to get the ball in these guy’s hands. They are clearly the most talented pass catchers with the most upside and the most explosive play potential. He caught three for 55 yards, for an 18.3-yard average. On most teams this signals a guy should be targeted more. On the Titans, it leads to further amplification about how the open guy doesn’t always get the ball. “We always watch and we say, ‘Oh, that guy is open on the right,’” Vrabel said. “Well, the read and the progression starts over here and it's a yes-no and you only have so much time. You can't start here and then think, ‘Oh, I'm going to come back,’ as pressure is coming. That's the thing we lose sight of. We want everybody that's open to get the football.” I’m being too simple, I’m sure. But if Burks is getting giant separation how about running more plays where Tannehill doesn’t have to find him further down the progression, where he’s the yes-no at the start of the play? Vrabel was complimentary of the contribution the Titans got from the young guys, including Burks. But he could have done more than he did. They’re perfectly comfortable throwing to fifth-rounder Kyle Philips, who was targeted nine times. They ran a play clearly designed for Geoff Swaim. Do more with Burks, sooner.
