IowaOiler
My suspicion is that Tannehill can read a defense pre-snap. That's going to let him know who his first read is. Josh Allen may go to the line thinking that the '#1 read' is what the OC wrote on the playbook, but most good QBs get to the line, surveil the defense, and then make a decision on who is most likely the best option and the first read. Obviously, they can be wrong, and there are times when even good-great QBs stare down receivers running routes the need time to develop, because their pre-snap evaluation of the defense indicated it. Tannehill knowing his first read is the best option is a testament to his pre-snap reads, not a knock because he doesn't have to move off them. He doesn't normally stare them down either, like Peyton did at times with Harrison and Wayne.
titanruss
Tannehill is great with presnap reads. He just kinda sucks post snap read-wise. Thats why PA helps him out so much.. which was the story of his entire career here except for a portion of a season a couple years back that made it look like he was worse on PA. But for the most part PA has made him,

Tannehill's passer rating on non-PA passes: 2019: 104.8 2020: 105.5 2021: 86.7 Here are numbers for a QB in 2020 and 2021 comparing PA to non-PA. Who is it and are they "made by PA"? So that means the offensive play calling should keep him away from doing this.. What he is good at is pre snap reads, accuracy, and playaction. NashvilleNinja
On 9/14/2022 at 5:13 AM, OILERMAN said: From PK: Treylon Burks averaged 4.9 yards of separation on the five passes thrown his way, per Next Gen Stats, second best in the NFL. He caught three for 55 yards, for an 18.3-yard average. On most teams this signals a guy should be targeted more. On the Titans, it leads to further amplification about how the open guy doesn’t always get the ball. “We always watch and we say, ‘Oh, that guy is open on the right,’” Vrabel said. “Well, the read and the progression starts over here and it's a yes-no and you only have so much time. You can't start here and then think, ‘Oh, I'm going to come back,’ as pressure is coming. That's the thing we lose sight of. We want everybody that's open to get the football.” I’m being too simple, I’m sure. But if Burks is getting giant separation how about running more plays where Tannehill doesn’t have to find him further down the progression, where he’s the yes-no at the start of the play? Vrabel was complimentary of the contribution the Titans got from the young guys, including Burks. But he could have done more than he did. They’re perfectly comfortable throwing to fifth-rounder Kyle Philips, who was targeted nine times. They ran a play clearly designed for Geoff Swaim. Do more with Burks, sooner. You traded away AJB. That's fine, no fault there as that twat wanted out. Then you proceed to draft his Spiderman twin with the top pick you got for him in the trade. You then proceed to carve out a role for him in the offense that any other staff would carve out for a 5th round pick and you give the role you would ideally give to the 1st round pick to the guy actually drafted in the 5th round. And this isn't even getting into the ridiculous 1st down running non-sense. I don't necessarily agree with Iowa about the general offensive philosophy we have... but it is painfully obvious how retarded the team is about how they implement that philosophy. No one is expecting us to be the fucking Chiefs or Bills, but god damn I wish someone would take a baseball bat and beat someone about the head with it. Downing, Vrabel, whoever the fuck. Retards. Keep in mind: on any given play, the QB is the one who determines the primary read based on his pre-snap read of the defensive alignment and how players match up. Now put yourself in Tannehill's shoes and ask which matchup has a better chance of producing a positive play: Burks vs. the opposing team's CB1 or CB2.....or Philips against a nickel, safety, or LB? In week one, RT often saw Philips as the better matchup; this week is a different defense with different players...so the matchups are different. Philips will probably still be the more favorable matchup more often than not....but if he keeps being targeted 10 times a game, it won't be long before opposing defenses start bracketing and rolling coverage to account for him, thereby creating more favorable 1:1 matchups for Burks. freakingeek
Trust isn't "given", its earned. I see Burks' role growing if he keeps having games like he did Sunday. I'm thrilled that he looks to have that YAC explosion that we hoped that he would have in order to replace AJB's production and it's really encouraging to hear the separation stat in that regard. Phillips is a great slot man and an even more dynamic punt returner. We haven't had that in years and with an offense that moves methodically, good field position is a huge advantage. KP is going to be really productive in both roles and hopefully he can put on some weight so his body can handle both roles. At some point, his value as a slot receiver will outweigh the risk as a punt returner but for now he is great returner and solid weapon for Tannehill, which we sorely needed. And a shout out to McCreary. Obviously the NFL game is not too big for him. He's been productive since the first day in camp and barring injuries, we're set at CB with young players. It won't be long before he gets his first pick. Quite possibly Monday night.
