It's not going to generate enthusiasm. Ever. It's an albatross. Even if it ever gets done, it's a living example of all the party's dysfunction. No hype machine will ever succeed with that thing ... but, instead of generating enthusiasm elsewhere and giving a sense of at least trying by re-pausing payments while his taskforce or whatever continues working through options and other legislative priorities get finalized one way or another, Biden is shitting on this campaign promise. His disinterest and near-disdain on this is going to be a far more significant driver of dissatisfaction than some here want to believe. There is already intense dissatisfaction with the party generally and this issue is a perfect example (just look at how some talk about it in this thread) of the elitist and condescending attitudes that exist within the party and directed towards others in the party. It's a point around which the apathy will crystallize ... apathy of Biden to even mime trying and the onset of apathy among many who had been enthusiastic supporters. I think it ends super ugly in upcoming elections. It's possible it'll add to it but I think there are bigger issues than this that people are worried about... some real, some vabricated. If I had to guess, I'd say the BBB gets passed but ends up being a shell of what they wanted.

Nah, more just an elitist and filled to overbrimming with disdain ... just like the POTUS probably is in private ... just like Joe Manchin surely is ... and it's all palpable and will matter. First off all the bank bailouts in 08 were used to give large bonuses in a lot cases, and the PPP loans were flat out robbery in many instances, we don't even know the degree yet And Debt forgiveness absolutely helps the overall economy. There are a ton of people who can afford to buy houses etc....because of the debt for student loans. And lastly it was a campaign promise made that excited a lot of younger voters who voted because of this issue, It's bad politics Jerry Blair, and luvyablue256

This entire argument is stupid. Address the cause not the symptom. Step one should be making it easier for student loans to be included in bankruptcy. Step 2 is reforming college tuition costs. Simply forgiving $50K of debt in isolation for everyone who currently owes money does nothing. It's funny how some of you shit all over people who live above their means and rack up credit but turn a blind eye when it's student debt. It's the same thing. Everyone who didn't come from a wealthy family and went to college off student loans from roughly the mid-2000s and onward "lived above their means". What else were they supposed to do, NOT go and work at UPS their whole lives? The perception that student debt is just like any other debt is asanine. If it were, it wouldn't have been a campaign promise. Edited December 15, 2021 by luvyablue256 OILERMAN

I worked my way through college by working at the university, worked extra jobs to pay for classes and then prioritized paying my loans off right away. I had very little help. It's the same thing even if it's predatory just like normal credit. I'm accountable for the debt I racked up in college and I'm debt free because I worked at it. I didn't make a lot of money early on either. We need reform not handouts that don't address the root cause.

Those could've been paid back more easily than student debt. I don't think you all understand the depth of this issue. The Biden campaign literally promised to discharge ALL federally held debt on household incomes under $150,000, and $10,000 on everyone else. Do you all not realize what working families can do with that extra $300 to say $500 per month? Why do you think Millenials are the generation that buy fewer homes and start fewer families? You can feel however you feel about them being discharged, but you can't say that Biden is playing fair by campaigning on this and backing away. It's suicidal politics.
