It's against my self interest to say this, as someone with student loan debt, but I don't think it's fair to ask average Americans to pay for the student loan debt of those who used debt to finance co

Anyone who supported PPP and not loan forgiveness is a hypocrite. Those who took the money and criticize it are even worse. We lost 200 billion to fraud alone on PPP.

I’m not a student debt forgiveness fan.  While I do think the cost of education is rediculous and in need of reform, which is another subject, they signed on for what they signed on for.     I’

It doesnt matter when it started. Not trying to score political points. Tuition is astronomical and it will get worse if tuition is written off and paid for by the government, which is really the taxpayers.

States are already doing things to try to mitigate the costs (although probably not enough). Trying to clear debt just helps those that were already hurt by the skyrocketing prices.

I still question how much of this could be done via EO or thru reconciliation.

Clearing a lot of debt probably could've been done if they had the votes but I admit I haven't looked into it much. I've only got around $50-60k in debt from my loans so i haven't really worried about it too much yet.

How about repaying all that actually paid tuitions?

I think if Biden cared about this policy they'd probably at least try to do it with his own power. There's no way he really believed in this one even if he sounded pretty emphatic about it.

There's no way he actually believes that it should happen or that the political consequences of not doing it are that big.

There's political consequences to doing it or not doing it honestly. The folks who paid off a $15-20,000 loan (Gen-X) will squeal and they're the most politically powerful generation now...

I'm all for hammering dems for poor messaging and not understanding the game being played. This is one case that isn't nearly the big deal some want to make it. Politicians break the vast majority of their campaign promises every year. We've known for decades policy doesn't really matter to voters. This is no different. What's annoying as fuck is the resident progressives once again complaining about ahit that isn't really that important in the grand scheme of things. Child tax credit, Healthcare, climate change, voting rights are all way more important than this issue. Not forgiving debt isn't going to affect the outcome of the midterms.

Totally agree but they haven’t actually addressed these at all yet. They aren’t going to do voting rights at all.

What are we watching and learning? I haven't really kept up w/ this topic. You think it's getting done? I'd be cool w/ it.

It would be helpful if you kept up instead of asking for a recap, but broadly:

The BBB might not even get passed, it's a gross shell of itself already and it'll probably get cut even more in an effort to claim victory in passage. It's not going to generate enthusiasm. Ever. It's an albatross. Even if it ever gets done, it's a living example of all the party's dysfunction. No hype machine will ever succeed with that thing ... but, instead of generating enthusiasm elsewhere and giving a sense of at least trying by re-pausing payments while his taskforce or whatever continues working through options and other legislative priorities get finalized one way or another, Biden is shitting on this campaign promise.

His disinterest and near-disdain on this is going to be a far more significant driver of dissatisfaction than some here want to believe. There is already intense dissatisfaction with the party generally and this issue is a perfect example (just look at how some talk about it in this thread) of the elitist and condescending attitudes that exist within the party and directed towards others in the party. It's a point around which the apathy will crystallize ... apathy of Biden to even mime trying and the onset of apathy among many who had been enthusiastic supporters.

I think it ends super ugly in upcoming elections.

Well I'd agree that Dems are going to get wiped out in the upcoming elections, but the reasons will be numerous.

I do think Biden is doing the right thing by ending the pause though. I thought he went way too far with the eviction ban and totally overstepped presidential authority there, and I'm glad SCOTUS struck that down.

This party has so many disparate factions it's going to be near impossible for it to hold together in the future. Maybe we'll get one last rodeo out of the coalition in 2024 though.

I don't recall Biden ever being for eliminating student debt. I thought he said maybe up to 10k or something along those lines toward the end of the primary?

Edit: just saw that clip. I do think he clarified throughout that it would need to be done with legislation and couldn't be done by executive fiat.
