Both sides have lost their minds on this. The right idiots who think Musk is somehow a champion of their ideology despite the fact his history shows someone who is actually way more moderate and is more of a centrist. The same is true of the left idiots who ignore his history and think he's going to champion conservatism under the guise of free speech which will lead to twitter no longer being "liberal".

What about the Twitter users who don't want to see the ads required to generate an extra $1 billion in revenue?

You know he's advocated for removal of all ads on Twitter in the past right? He's also a believer in the subscription model.

More hand wringing over nothing. It's amazing how spun up some of you are over this. Why not wait and see what Twitter becomes? I doubt much changes for day to day users outside of a less aggressive ban hammer.

Twitter isn't going to make a billion a year from subscribers.

The NY Times makes $351 million a year from subscriptions.  Dow Jones i.e. the Wall Street Journal appears to make about the same ("Circulation and subscription revenue increased $38 million, or 12%link).

I've worked in media for years.  As businesses get sold and resold, they accumulate more and more interest payments and covenants to keep.  The staff gets squeezed and the business becomes a shell.

For a tech company, losing staff is very challenging.  You can't buy the systems that keep a Twitter running off the shelf.  What works for Spanfeller is not going to work for Musk.

But Twitter is closer to the Facebook business model than to a newspaper. Not saying Twitter can ever do what Facebook does in terms of profitability, but it’s not the same as the NYT or WSJ.

It's still a challenge, just a different ballgame.

As far as subscriptions, they just started Twitter Blue fairly recently, which is basically a subscription. I have no clue how many people pay for it or how much it brings in, but honestly I’d think people would be less likely to be inclined to financially support Twitter now that the richest guy in the world owns it.

I think it’s bad because it’s probably overall bad for a guy with Trumpy personality traits to own Twitter.  I don’t think it’ll be horrible but it will be worse.

But it will be entertaining!

I know the right thinks it's liberal, but do liberals?

I find it curious that Musk put that much money into a social media platform that's been around for 15 years already .     Considering the history of social media platforms,   you gotta wonder how much longer Twitter can remain at the top of that mountain.

Is there really any competition for what Twitter does though? Some have tried, but there’s really no one who has come close.
