Certainly Obama was no warmonger, but he was never dovish. Being willing to negotiate with countries like Cuba and Iran isn’t being dovish as we weren’t at war with them. Better diplomacy with Russia and China just maked sense because you want better relations with any other large country. 

 

As for the whole Romney-Russia debate comment, Obama was still right. The question wasn’t whether Russia was our friend or not, it was “what's the biggest geopolitical threat facing America?” This was in the middle of the war on terror. If you asked who the bigger threat was at the time, Russia or terrorism, the answer was terrorism. It was the right answer politically and the right answer factually.

I feel like your interpretation of the word "dovish" is exceedingly narrow here. Hawkish and Dovish are broader terms, mostly oriented towards realism and idealism, respectively. I really just dispute your interpretation of events. It's hard to argue that after the annexation of Crimea and the disruption in modern elections, that Russia wasn't the most important geopolitical foe. Which, for the record, Romney simply lifted from McCain.

Hawkish vs dovish is not same as realist vs idealist. It’s normally about being militaristic. And when it’s not it’s generally got some sort of modifier attached, like “hawkish monetary policy”. Anyway, that was what I assumed your intent was.

 

If your argument was that he was an idealist then sure, all politicians are on the campaign trail. That’s nothing particular to Obama.

In 2012, Russia was not our top geopolitical threat. Simple as that.

 

If you asked that question today then they might be a reasonable choice, but not at the time. Hell, even today the answer is probably China regardless of the attention Russia gets.

She's also funny in interviews with media/talk show types.  Very quick with her verbal skills overall.

 

 

Some of the clips of her questioning people at the Senate like Sessions at his confirmation was when I first started paying attention to her.

Buttigieg, I imagine, will be pushing all his chips to the center of the table in the Iowa caucuses. Being a mayor in a small city in Indiana, he obviously knows how to connect with midwestern folks, and to the extent anyone knows who he is it will be folks in the midwest. If he can eek out a strong finish or even an improbably win in Iowa, then who the hell knows in a wide open primary?

 

He's young, he won 80% of the vote in rural America in his reelection after coming out as gay, he is a Rhodes scholar and Harvard graduate, and he served a tour in Afghanistan. Not a bad list of highlights right there.

I have kind of been wary of Kamala Harris but listening to a bit of her speech yesterday I have to say she seems to have the goods. She will be a formidable candidate. Has a nice tone and cadence to her voice and she seems tough enough. I also think she has a chance to perform better in the South than people think. Glad she is in the race.

 

Tried to change the first post to move Hillary from unlikely to "other possible," but there was an error. I'll try again later. Should Bernie be moved to officially running?
