PFF: Worst Picks in the Draft

8. Derrick Henry, RB, Tennessee Titans

After shoring up the right tackle position in the first round with Jack Conklin, the Titans continued to find personnel that fits the “exotic smashmouth” scheme they are trying to build by picking up the most physically imposing running back in the draft. Unfortunately, Henry doesn’t offer much of anything different than what DeMarco Murray already brings to the table, and they passed up a golden opportunity to shore up their offensive line even further. Henry is great at falling forward on downhill runs, but he’s chopped down easily in space and isn’t a natural receiver out of the backfield. Drafting a backup running back in the second round with a roster full of needs is not something we can get on board with.

Isn't this kind of the point to drafting him? Split carries and depth behind the starting RB who has an injury history?

jeez, that "exotic smashmouth" moniker has taken on a life of its own with the media.  It's like a ready made bumper sticker sound bite that can be used to support or to disparage depending on the pundit's perspective that day.  recalls the "dream team" quip from VY.  Anyway, Mularkey should get the term trademarked if they are going brand him with it, even after he tried to reset that comment.

Titans bring in one of the more regarded Centers in free agency

Titans move up in the draft to take the consensus best RT

Titans use their fourth pick of the draft to take a Heisman winning, SEC-record setting, consensus 2nd best back in the draft who fits in perfectly with their desired offense......REACH!

If Seattle or Carolina had taken Henry, people would be hoisting them on their shoulders and throwing parades.

They aren't wrong. We could have gotten a better RB later. There were lots of better choices than Henry available. You can't honestly tell me a backup RB is more important than a starting CB like Alexander. We also could have taken Vonn Bell and then traded back from 64. Then we could have gotten Kenneth Dixon, Jonathan Williams, or Alex Collins later. Henry was a very poor pick. Good GMs can find RBs anywhere. Also, with such a good RB crop next year, we likely can't draft one early anymore. It was a really bad pick no matter what way you spin it. JRob made lots of good picks but this wasn't one of them.

Most of these pundits are too smart for their own good. Though CJ fell off post-2nd contract  he was a far superior player to LenDale White and every pundit was shitting on Fisher and the Titans FO for "getting a RB in Rd 1 after investing in LenDale White in the 2nd just a year ago."  Could you imagine what kind of team we would have been with LenWhale alone to rely on in those gruesome VY years??

One injury to Murray and we are back to relying on Dexter McCluster, Antonio Andrews and LenDale 2.0 (Cobb). These pundits are idiots.

Color me shocked!

Another boneheaded pick from the Titans.

Oh...

But if you're Los Angeles, you look at what you could have taken with the picks you had and then what Tennessee came away with (LOL) and you feel much better about the move up to get Goff at No. 1 overall.

One would think, if they were thinking.

I don't dislike Henry 'the player', I dislike Henry 'the pick'. Mainly because I think the positional value was just...bad. You could've gotten a competent back-up RB in the 3rd round,or even the 5th round, in this draft. We used up draft capital on a guy that likely won't start this season. If DeMarco Murray is a bust for us and gets injured constantly this season then we'd be far better placed to draft a running back in 2017 - a draft that will have potentially three 'elite' guys at the position.

I think Vonn Bell would've been an immediate and competent starter at free safety. Even Cyrus Jones or Mackensie Alexander (who I dislike) likely would've been upgrades at cornerback - with Jones providing return help for our special teams. Tyler Boyd and Michael Thomas were also available, two guys who would've added immediate help in the receiving game.

I pretty much agree. I'm not pulling my hair out at the pick, and clearly they needed to pick up a RB somewhere. I'm just not convinced Henry was the best option for the 45h pick.

He's got great straight line speed for his size, and if he gets to the second level he'll be a load. I'm just not sure he'll be able to get to the second level as much in the NFL as he did in college. There are not going to be gaping holes to run through. Getting to the second level in the NFL means being able to move laterally and accelerate quickly through tight windows. His high center of gravity and longer stride make this much more difficult.

We'll see. I hope he kills it.

Yet an extremely high pick in the first round is better value?
