Jay Cutler (Thread update: Unnamed Sources saying deal w/Titans in works)

ESPN is reporting that because of Cutler's contract, the Bears will have to give a draft pick plus Cutler to trade him.  NFL rules require some kind of compensation for a trade to be valid but does not say if it has to be equal.  So ESPN is reporting that Chicago will give Cutler and an early round pick for a late round pick.

So basically, Titans might be able to give one of their 6th for Cutler and a 3rd.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports several unnamed NFL executives believe the Bears may have to give up a draft pick in order to trade Jay Cutler.

Still owed a guaranteed $25.5 million on the seven-year deal signed last offseason, Cutler's contract appears to be trade prohibitive. Schefter's sources believe the Bears could offset the big guarantees by offering Cutler AND a draft pick to prospective trade partners. NFL rules dictate the Bears would have to receive some compensation in return, but Chicago could get around the rule by accepted a late-round pick in exchange for Cutler and a better pick. It would be a high price to pay to offload a talented quarterback, but with coach Marc Trestman likely finished after the season, Chicago may simply press the reset button.

Call me crazy but I make the trade. The only thing that gives me pause is his cap hit because we need to have a strong free agency period. That 3rd round pick though....This is a REALLY deep draft at a lot of positions we need help in.

They won't trade for Cutler. Why bother? They don't need him.

He be dealt to buffalo, tampa, washington, Cleveland, nyj. All of those teams need him more than Tennessee.

I'd trade just for the 3rd round pick...I would just see it as committing a bit of your cap and a 6th/7th rounder to get a third round pick. Small price to pay even if Cutler never takes a snap.Maybe my assessment of the value is off but it seems like a steal to me.

Cosell on Cutler. This may have been posted already, I haven't read thru the entire thread. But if it hasn't Cosell is basically saying that Cutler is a bad fit for Trestman's WC offense, with the short, precision passes required. Said he doesn't throw with anticipation, waits for the receiver to get open, but makes it work because his arm talent is amazing.

He said he'd be better off in a downfield offense but even that didnt work great under Martz.

The way I see it OMan is probably right, there's not much to lose & maybe it would get the fans a bit excited. Whisenhunt does seem to help vets & his offense is perfect for Cutler. Cosell didn't mention how putrid Chicago's OL was when Martz was there which is a huge factor as he never max protects. I can see him having some huge games here if we get a #1 WR & Roos comes back at RT but I just don't think he's consistent enough.

I just think, considering how good Mett looked, that it just makes so much sense to build off that. But if they want to go with Cutler at least Mett is still the future, which beats drafting a QB at 1or 2. I also say this seriously, I don't know that Cutler is better than Chuck Whitehurst right now.

I'd do it in a heartbeat

If they do bring in Cutler it could backfire. Cutler looks like a grumpy person not good for locker room chemistry. Also the cap room Cutler might eat up. Mett could possibly be traded as well. If Cutler ends up sucking they will wish they would've gave Mett the proper chance to show what he can do. However I'm cool with Cutler coming in as long as he wins and as long as Mett is still part of the long term plan at QB.

Bash Cutler all you want.  But his current QB rating puts him at 17th in the league. Squarely in the middle.  That's roughly where he's always been.  That means to about half the teams in the league, he's an upgrade. Sanchez isn't a lot different.  He's currently 19th based on his QB rating.

So for teams wanting to upgrade this offseason, its Cutler, Sanchez or take a chance on Mariotta/Winston.

I don't consider myself anyones's spokesman. I do like to try to clarify misunderstandings when they arise. The thing about labeling people crazy is that once you do that, you automatically discount anything they have to say as non-sense. The "crazies" beliefs and mine don't line up 100% when it comes to Mett but I can see why they're so excited and exuberant about him. I'm not ready to "crown" him but I don't think who are, are crazy because of it.

I personally think it's unwise to put all our eggs in is basket but really that's more a function of my relatively conservative personality rather than anything Mett has or hasn't done. I just don't believe that anyone was so crazy about Mett that they were 100% closed off to a PROVEN QB coming in. I believe that many misinterpreted the excitement over possibly finding a QB with a cult-driven obsession with Mett for just being Mett. Essentially, Mett might be the answer but he's not the only possible answer.

It's the Internet, sort of.  There are some people just wishing to start fights and arguments.  The style of posting of some always has a you are screwed up tinge in it.  It doesn't matter where on the Internet, Forums are the worse.  Titans Report is one of the best, but still those tendencies show up.  I tried posting on a Poker Forum.  The first response or two would be "You shouldn't have even played that thrash"   No so called help in understanding or analyzing the hand.  Just personal attack.  I keep my ignore list up to date at TR and that helps.

I would love to read a debate over what is really happening on the field, with examples of play to support one side or the other.  If a Mett isn't ready, point out a series of plays from the same game to support it.  If you think he has potential, point out some good series.

If we could get Cutler for a 3rd or 4th round pick and not have to invest much it is a no lose scenario.  Mettenberger is going to be in TN three more years and would take over eventually anyway IMO.  This would be a stop gap for a couple of years IMO if it did happen.

I'd prefer to use a 3rd or 4th round pick on a QB in the draft to develop as the backup.

.

Sox, the article suggests that the Bears would have to ship Cutler and a 3rd to us, we send back a 6th or 7th , and we take some of the cap hit.. I suppose we can re-structure some of the contract, to make it a 2 year deal.. I suppose this will re-ignite some fan interest, and show we are serious about getting better.. now bring in Crabtree or Fitzgerald and you are talking

Rapoport just had an update on this. Basically said the Titans started doing their research the second Cutler was benched. Also said Nashville is his preferred destination if not Chicago.
