Nash
This question came up this am on the Zone.. concensus between Howard and Wychek was that he would go early 2nd round if the draft were held today ..
MIKE75
Too many people are hung up on what round Mettenberger was originally drafted in. Mettenberger is definitely not your typical sixth round QB in any way. It is really no different than a guy like Burfict up in Cincy who went undrafted based on off the field concerns but is now a pro bowl player and one of the best linebackers in the game. Seantrel Henderson offensive lineman who fell all the way to the seventh based on what a lot were saying about his weight and work ethic but seems to be doing well in Buffalo. Perceptions can cause really good players to drop but its really paid attention to when it happens to quarterbacks. When it is all said and done Blake Bortles one of the first QB's chosen and Zach Mettenberger one of the last QB's chosen could end up being the best QB's to come out of this class. The only trap i think Tennessee needs to quit falling for is the flashy mobile QB's that they have went crazy for the last decade.
OILERMAN
Russell Wilson played against the 3rd teamers when he was a rookie against the Titans.... It was pretty obvious he has some serious skills regardless of the competition. The stats are meaningless, the play is not. Mett's stats are not why he's been impressive this preseason. The reason Mett is impressive is because he drops back, reads the defense, throws accurate lasers that are difficult passes for even the top QBs. He's shown this ability throw after throw. Jake Locker has never came close to showing that type of ability in preseason or the regular season. I think if the draft were held again Mettenberger would go in the 1st round. Cyrus
Vontaze Burfict played terribly his final season at Arizona State. He was reportedly belligerent to the coaching, had poor effort on the field and made bad football decisions. He deserved to go undrafted. It's amazing that the Bengals were able to turn him around, but the lightbulb apparently came on for Burfict. A prime reason why Mettenberger went in the 6th round is because the NFL has been trending towards a totally different type of quarterback. When you zig when others are zagging you can take advantage of market inequalities. ... The stats are meaningless, the play is not. Mett's stats are not why he's been impressive this preseason. The reason Mett is impressive is because he drops back, reads the defense, throws accurate lasers that are difficult passes for even the top QBs. ... 100%. It's the caliber of throws he's making. It's the same thing he did at LSU by the way. If we accept that the NFL is cyclical and that a run first, defensive minded philosophy (see: Seahawks/49ers) may be the best means of building a contender then there's no reason that Mettenberger can't be the trigger-guy. Let's just look at his 2013 splits for a moment: - On 3rd Down Mettenberger had 89 attempts with a 65.2% completion percentage and a monstrous 10.94 yard per attempt average. He also had 9 TDs and only a single interception. His college QB rating was 188.2 Nearly 25 points higher than any other down. - In the Red Zone, Mettenberger had 43 attempts with a 46.5% completion percentage with 13 TDs and no interceptions. - In the 4th Quarter, Mettenberger had 50 attempts with a 56% completion percentage with a 9.6 YPA average, 6 TDs and zero interceptions. This is essentially the type of quarterback for a traditional, defensive minded team. Now the Russell Wilson and Kaepernick improvisational style of quarterback is certainly the new thing, but Mettenberger is an old-school, pure pocket quarterback in a throw-back style. Perhaps in more ways than one, he is very similar to Ben Roethlisberger. Manage the game and make 3rd down conversions when you need to. Don't turn the ball over in the red-zone and run the play-action game to generate chunks of offense to keep the defense honest. What's also interesting is how he pairs with Justin Hunter. Here's the thing though, of Justin Hunter's catches 76.7% of them went for first downs or touchdowns. That was the highest in the FBS last year and it was in the SEC too. He may have some concentration drops and may not have the most natural hands, but when he catches the ball they're big plays. Tavon Austin? 10th on the list with 50%. Hunter, 1st. Mettenberger to Justin Hunter in the preseason: 5 passes: 1 TD, 3 First Downs, 1 Incomplete. 129 yards. That's in about 2 quarters of play too. Mettenberger and Hunter are a match made in heaven in terms of skill-set and metrics.
MIKE75
Well it is definitely surprising to me and i'm sure many others that Mettenberger fell as far as he did in the draft. I was thinking during draft night we might pick him in the second and when they didn't i figured he would be long gone by the time we drafted again. I thought the best QB's in the draft were Bortles,Bridgewater,Carr,Garoppolo and Mettenberger. Hated it when Jax snatched Bortles up with their first round pick because i wanted him and was sure we would've picked him if he fell to our spot. Was not too happy about the Lewan or Sankey picks think we could've done better but warmed up to them since. The biggest surprise to me was when Houston picked Tom Savage in the fourth and i was glad they did because i don't think he is anything special. Once we picked in the fifth i figured we might bypass on a QB for this year in the draft. However i was surprised and glad when we got Mettenberger in the sixth because talent wise he is way better than a typical sixth rounder.

WG53
You've been rather quiet on the subject of Mettenberger. I've been quiet on most things this summer. The board has been ridiculously repetitive and boring. I have no interest in reading Reo's snorefests.
IsntLifeFunny
I also remember someone saying that the preseason absolutely doesn't matter but I guess that doesn't apply to ZM. So get aboard the train. I remember that. He was wrong. I never acted like the preseason doesn't matter, especially this year with a new staff. It doesn't mean he was wrong when it came to preseason stats, even if he wasn't using in the same context I am. The stats aren't nearly as important as to how they arrived. That was one of the main things i liked about the hiring of Whisenhunt. Mettenberger does seem like the type of QB he does like.

Titansurf32
This is when this place devolves into absurdity. A redraft after 3 preseason games? Shouldn't that be 3 seasons? Pump the breaks, that's bad juju kimosabe. I call mettenberger breaking his neck on Thursday night now.

Cyrus
I think Cosell has said before that by the end of the preseason you generally know who can play and who can't. (at least for quarterbacks)
