oldschool
Mettenberger has shown some amazing things in the last 3 weeks but lets not get carried away here. I think he'll get his shot later this season to show what he can do in real games and he may parlay that into an opportunity to compete for the job next year. That being said, this idea that he's a franchise QB in waiting is nuts. As oman posted this morning, the QB ratings average to below average Qbs, Like Locker for instance (couldn't resist), are putting up this preseason are astronomical. Mettenberger looks the part but doing it when it matters is a different animal.
scine09
Well oldschool, reo, japan, others that think I'm crazy for this opinion, let me ask you this. You don't think if given the opportunity to have a mulligan and the guy had only two choices, Mettenberger or Manziel, the Browns GM wouldn't want Mettenberger right about now? I understand that Manziel went near the end of the first round, not 4th, but that's not my point. The whole purpose of this thread is to point out that it's clear that Mettenberger looks to be one of the best rookie QB's taken in this draft. Generally QB's get overdrafted to begin with. So, after seeing his performances and the obvious talent that he has you don't think that the Browns would love a Mettenberger on the team over what they currently have? Guest
Sadly, his premature over the top remarks re Mettenberger still seem realistic compared to Scotty's posts on the subject!

That and the fact that all the titans qbs are killing expectations I credit more to Whiz than the rule changes.

scine09
If being the operative word. I don't think you are nuts for believing in Mettenberger. I think you are nuts for being so sure about it. I never said I was SURE about it. All I'm trying to say is that he's showing the traits that you need to be a franchise QB. And when you have a guy like that on your roster you don't move him for anything and build your team around that guy. Of course there's the chance that he could flame out. Generally when you take a QB top 5 you're taking a QB that has the traits needed to become a franchise QB. Bortles clearly has those traits. The rest of the QB's taken early (Manziel, Bridgewater and Carr) I don't think do. And Mettenberger is showing himself to have the same types of traits. Having the traits and succeeding are two different things. There's never any way to know if the physical traits will carry over.
Pragidealist
Looking good in preseason vs 2nd and 3rd string means something esp for a 6th rounder but it doesn't mean top 5, sorry. You're drastically over valuing what he's done so far. It matters. Playing 2nd stingers allows Mett a more time to hold the ball and more leeway to take risks without getting punished with turnovers. This has allowed him to flash his potential with some impressive throws. What I would expect if he started is less time to make decisions, more need to hit the check down, and punishment on the risks. His ability to become a franchise qb will be based on his ability to learn and adapt his game to those situations. Take more calculated risks, get the ball out much faster, and read defenses quicker. What he has done is flash his a potential. It very high which is great. Will that translate into success? We won't likely know this year unless Locker goes down early. He would need extended reps against 1's to see how he adapts after the anticipated struggles. That's just my opinion

scine09
He would need extended reps against 1's to see how he adapts after the anticipated struggles. Which is the same thing for any rookie QB taken, whether it's the first round or the 6th round.

Yes but the difference is when you just invested a 1 you cannot then invest another 1 the following year. When you've invested a 6th then you can afford to invest a one or two the following year. None of that has changed with three preseason games. The only difference is that we could now reasonably expect Mett to win that battle if it's only a 2 or 3. It's a great position for the Titans, still an up hill battle for Mett but he's made the best of every opportunity and has dramatically increased his chances of success. He just still has a long way to go

You only take a QB at #1 if you don't think you have your franchise QB on the roster. If they take a 1 next year it'll mean that they have no future plans with Mettenberger. Which would floor me. Face
I'm just ready to start talking about the rest of the team. We've all beat the shit out of this topic already. I love Mett & think he's our QBOF but the seasons starting in 2 weeks & he's going to be irrelevant once it does.
