Unless he negotiated a contract that covered housing, food, and personal transportation, he was likely supporting himself via his paycheck or the money he maybe made illegally in college (again probably not much since it was Rutgers and he wasn’t some top recruit). Maybeeee he had a few endorsements in New Jersey as an alumni, but I can’t imagine that was supporting him through his rookie contract. I think what’s much more likely is he lived relatively frugally as far as pro athletes go, and eventually the money from his contract that he put into stocks/funds/real estate made more than the money he spent from those contracts. I’d bet he didn’t break even until his second contract. But once he made a ton of money, he was still probably living at a pretty modest spending level. Eventually his assets grew beyond the original 80 million he earned. Then he can say “oh I never spent a dime of my $80 mil.” When in reality it’s a lot easier to make your money make money when you have $80 million and your expenses are 100k than when you have $80,000 and your expenses are $60,000. Still, good for him, just felt a bit insulting to read that post as someone who’s moderately financially literate. And another thing not noted is if he made 80 million pretax, even with tax advantaged accounts, he’d still be paying a sizable chunk to taxes. So even if he never touched his paychecks, it’d still take a long time for the amount put away to eclipse the amount he technically made. He seems like a good dude and isn’t peddling some money saving app (yet), but it does seem like some bs he’s saying to heighten his status as a LinkedIn influencer or something. I prefer OchoCinco’s style of, “I literally didn’t pay for housing and bought jewelry from Claire’s” approach to money management because it’s so much more feasible to just keep expenses low than to literally not spend your paycheck at all (even for big earners like nfl players). Ehh I think it’s pretty obvious he just made money off investments that eventually became more than what he was initially paid. Edit: Or he lived off the interest from some high interest savings account. His rookie year he made around 500k plus around a 500k signing bonus, so if he put that away and lived off of 5% interest and it made 7%, I suppose he technically never spent his paycheck.
