If Jackson is the most qualified…hey, great. But going about it in this manner is just stoking the flames and will leave a lot of Americans seeing her as a quota hire, regardless of her experience or qualifications. Biden didn’t “immediately announce” anything. He said during the Democratic primaries that he would nominate a black woman to the Supreme Court. He said it because he wanted black voters to vote for him. Pretty simple reasoning. And it was effective apparently because… he won. And now he is going to follow through with that promise because he isn’t an idiot…
El Guapo
Well, if youre insisting on turning the SCOTUS into a reflection of America, where is the Asian? And as a Cuban, there is nothing about Sotomayor that makes me feel satisfied. This is rather absurd thinking. Nevertheless, I really don't care. It will be a lefty regardless of color so not my cup of tea but he should nominate whomever he wants and unless they are totally fucked up they should be confirmed. I don't think they will character assassinate the nominee like the other side does always. And a black woman may be better than Garland who obviously is a political hack and not much of a jurist... Little Earl
Because the Dems are so beholden to identity politics, this will be the third woman in a row they have picked. And we all know that Sotomayor was NOT one of the best candidates available, but she fit their profile. As Guapo said, if they want to play this game, then there are more hispanics than Blacks, and where is the Asian?
LongTimeFan
Whomever Biden nominates, the GOP should make as little resistance as possible, unless there is a major flaw in the nominee. Ask tough questions, bring up any far left decisions but don't attack the nominee as the Dems do.

Obviously up to this point the nominations were biased towards a particular gender and demographic and so the "system" can't be trusted to pick the best candidate. This nonsense about "why don't they pick the best candidate" runs under the flawed assumption that that is what they have been doing, which is simply incorrect. They haven't been picking the best candidates, they've been picking candidates that look like them and are culturally like them, so because they want to nominate a black women, now you want them to start doing it? Why weren't you worried about the best candidate before? because you assumed they were because they look like you? Quotas are unfortunately a necessary mechanism to address this and situations like this all throughout society, because the system can't and won't by itself. It just can't get the momentum to do so and those in power have no incentive to do so. Very few systems genuinely rely on picking the best to be functional, and very few systems are arguably even functional for the majority let alone optimized to do that. It simply needs intervention, It's really that simple.

As you noted though, it’s quite hilarious to watch a conservative talk about systems and how they work especially when it comes to the US Constitution. Conservatives ruled in Dred Scott just as they did Plessy V Ferguson. It doesn’t matter what party they were, they were ultimately white conservatives who didn’t want change. Literally the only change they want when it comes to the Supreme Court is to get rid of abortion. That’s it. They don’t understand history except as it comes politically and they have zero concern over our country’s history of racism.

El Guapo
Guys, I'm not condemning a pick because of race, gender, creed....I think any reasonable candidate unless flat out marxists, should be approved promptly. It is your side that attacks viciously using any available means and tack including bullshit unconfirmed crap from 30 years ago and religious beliefs. You try to absolutely destroy a candidate that you disagree with. Quit acting so self righteous- you only want a liberal black women and the liberal is the most important. I doubt I would hear all this smug crap if it was a conservative black woman. So get off your high horse...
