Payton's two biggest issues to me were some of the clock management in big games and losing games at home to teams that he had no business losing to. I made a post about it one time but it seemed to happen on a yearly basis. Remember, they lost to the 3-13 Titans in 2015. They've lost home games to a bad Tampa team, a bad Cleveland team, even this year to a bad Giants team. He's done eight Oilers/Titans game in his career (amazing that's all it's been). Since he came to NBC in 2009 the Titans are 0-5 in games he's called, and they've lost the last six going back to 1995. They've been outscored 178-74 in those games, never having scored more than 17 points in any of them. The last time he called a victory for the franchise? December 19, 1993, 26-17 at Pittsburgh. Oilers fans will remember it as the day that Webster Slaughter got hurt as well as the day they clinched the AFC Central. The other game was also a win, 17-14 at Cleveland in 1992. Whoever his backup is will be just as good or better. He's only ever shown out in games where they keep him from throwing more than 20 times and he gets clean deep bombs.
