Student Loan Forgiveness Discussion

My issue is don't dangle this carrot during a campaign then backtrack after you win election. There's merit to canceling debt, especially on certain income levels. And I'd bet there's a bipartisan path to some kind of separate legislation that curtails the exorbitant cost. I still dont know why this wasn't something apart of the BBB plan.

And not extending the pause on payments is absolutely going to hurt us in the midterms and give all the flighty folks the ammo to spew the "both parties same" silliness and sit out midterms. But these are the punches we leave ourselves open to...

It's against my self interest to say this, as someone with student loan debt, but I don't think it's fair to ask average Americans to pay for the student loan debt of those who used debt to finance co

Anyone who supported PPP and not loan forgiveness is a hypocrite. Those who took the money and criticize it are even worse. We lost 200 billion to fraud alone on PPP.

I’m not a student debt forgiveness fan.  While I do think the cost of education is rediculous and in need of reform, which is another subject, they signed on for what they signed on for.     I’

I have student loan debt from my masters degree, and while I would love for it to just go away, I don't think it is fair to the average taxpayer to have to cover the cost of my professional education or anyone else's.

That said, the one way I could see it making sense is with higher education reform - with state schools becoming tuition free and any state school debt being wiped out in accordance with that. I think that's a ways off though.

I definitely don't think a firefighter or union electrician should be paying for someone's 200k in student loan debt from getting their degree in History of Medieval Art or Anthropology or Women's Social Studies or whatever.

This entitlement philosophy where young people think that not only should the Education Department be subsidizing their education at the budget level, but also paying in full for their useless bullshit degrees and their room/board/transportation costs, when the degree has no ROI either financially or for society at large is pretty crazy.

But you should definitely be able to go to school tuition free by serving in the military or being a teacher or maybe serving in the Peace Corps or something like that.

A real problem here is that people treat college as if it is job training. It isn't. It is higher learning. That is all it has ever been.  Only for certain professions has it ever been actual job training, but it has been pushed onto us since we were young that we must go to college if we want a good life.  Nowadays a lot of professions do require a degree.

The real issue is why is tuition so out of control? Any plans to forgive loans or pay (guarantee) for tuition will just make tuition skyrocket since schools will look at it as money from heaven. And endowments have grown tremendously. People talk about price gouging during crisis but the real gougers are the universities and grad schools...

It skyrocketed under Bush as they deregulated for profit colleges.

It doesnt matter when it started. Not trying to score political points. Tuition is astronomical and it will get worse if tuition is written off and paid for by the government, which is really the taxpayers.

It's already paid by the taxpayers on the front end. State taxes fund state universities and their exorbitant faculty & administrators.

I wasn't pointing out that it skyrocketed under Bush because of Republican versus Democrat thing as both parties are about equally responsible for issues regarding tuition skyrocketing over the years.
